Hi everyone, I am looking to add a new piece to my collection and I am looking at used reduced Speedmaster models. However I am not an expert, and I would not know which one would be best to go with. Which one would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance.

I'm personally not a fan of this model. Not an integrated chronograph. I'd look up a little more at the Speedmaster Racing 40mm

The piggyback chronograph is typically a more costly service by a significant amount and this is the issue I have with the Speedmaster Reduced. The Speedmaster Date, Speedmaster MK40, Speedmaster Racing, all use different integrated chronographs and are less of a hassle as you can just get your local independent watchmaker to handle it.

My vote is none. These models are overpriced for what they are (a piggy-back chrono system that very likely needs to be service). Most people buy these because they want the Speedmaster name, but don’t want to pay the price.

There are plenty of automatic chronographs out there from other brands that have a 40mm case and are a lot cheaper. If you want an automatic chronograph, get one of those. If it has to be a Speedmaster automatic, get a day-date model (with a GOOD movement) or one of the recent Racing models.

I’d echo the comments of @dsio and @Donn Chambers - Speedy dates are fantastic watches. Great, indestructible Valjoux 7750 movements and tons of styles over the years, including some black-on-black if you want to stick with more of a traditional Speedy look.

A lot of dislike on the Reduced today. Maybe somebody needs to answer the OP. My recommendation is to look for one of these.

Sapphire crystal and better bracelet make this the best Reduced Speedmaster in my opinion. Omega charges the same price to service one of these as a regular Speedmaster.
You may be right (and the sapphire model can indeed be seen as the best from several POVs) but then it was a question akin to 'what is the best of the sexually transmitted diseases?' 😉 ::stirthepot::

I've tried them, the appeal being the dial colourways (I had the yellow, blue and red) and the noticeably lower price levels. It didn't take long for the reduced size to come into play and they were moved on. Honestly I think they're more for a smaller wrist. I don't know why I didn't gift them to my wife.

Go back a few years, and a Speedy Reduced used to represent a bit of a bargain (even factoring in servicing). However, pricing has changed a lot over the last few years, and now they are simply not worth it.
I always felt that aesthetically, they look a bit off. The subdial positions look too far apart, and the case size is too tall for the diameter. If the diameter is the issue, I'd recommend seeking out a FOIS instead, which has the same 39mm diameter as the Speedy Reduced.

As a former Reduced (ref. 3510.50) owner here's my 2 cents...
What I liked about it
*Great size (top lugs to bottom lugs distance...and the overall height of the watch as it sits on your wrist) for people with smaller wrists
*I loved the bracelet. I has a nice taper to it. The mixed links/surfaces with both polished and brushed surfaces really dress the watch up. Slim clasp allowed multiple positions for micro adjust and never felt like it added any bulk to the bottom of the bracelet.
*Costs the same to service as a Speedmaster Pro
*About half the price of a Speedmaster Pro which eases the "clench" factor for people just getting started in the hobby and haven't normalized spending $5,000 - $10,000 on a wrist watch. At the time when I had bought my Speedy Reduced I had never spent more than 5 or 6 bucks on a watch....so tripling that was a big jump for me at the time.
*These were available in tritium and look very nice once they start to patina
*This was not a daily driver for me, but if it will be something that you wear most days of the week, the automatic / self winding movement is a nice convenience to grab it and go in the mornings.

What I disliked about it
*The reference number I bought had the little minute numbers at the 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. minute markers. This didn't bother me much at first, but after spending hours on the this forum and other sites looking Speedmastesr it did start to bother me that mine didn't look like the "real one", and ultimately was one of the primary reasons for me selling it for a Speedy Pro. (If you go with the ref# 3539.50, as suggested above, that won't be a problem since that reference omitted the little minute numbers....but those 3539.50 references are the highest priced out of the black dialed Reduced lineup and that point I think you may as well just spend a little more and get a Professional.)
*The crown would occasionally, and just ever so slightly, dig into my wrist
*The subdial spacing seemed kind of off since the hour markers at 3 and 9 are greatly shortened.

What's your primary reason for gravitating towards the Reduced vs. the Professional?

You will not find much love for the speedy reduced models here on OF or any of the other horology fora.
Common gripes are Performance issues with the piggy back module, difficult to service, etc. as mentioned by others.
For what it’s worth, mine has been a daily for almost 20 years. It has been at omega for a makeover once and I’ve had it serviced locally without issue.
It’s a great watch and I don’t see any reason for you not to get it if you like it.
However, don’t expect it to fill a desire or a fix for a Speedy Pro, because it won’t.
That’s why I have both!

What is a large wrist? My left is 18.5 cm, 7-1/4 inches. I bought a Reduced because I liked the look and I've been wearing nothing larger than 36mm for five decades. I only have two automatic chronographs and they are both piggy-back movements. Only two of my chronographs have the same dial layout so I don't get get hung up about things like that (both Valjoux 7733). In fact not all have the same pusher functions (Landeron x48 anyone?).

Servicing? Yeah, Omega do seem to be more expensive than my older Valjoux-based chronos, but is that just because my regular watchmaker won't do Omega & I have to go elsewhere? Shrug. If you can't afford to get 30-50 year old chronos serviced then very many brands do a big line of quartz throwaways, yes I do have a few of those too.

And here's a bonus point gifted by the nay-sayers -- it keeps the prices for Reduceds sensible. Which is great if you want to wear one and are not looking at resale.

disagree…

Clearly this one:

Well since neither are actually a Speedmaster Reduced model, neither!

I was gifted this one by Omega back in 2006 when I worked for their timekeeping dept as they returned to the Olympics in Torino Italy, taking over from Swatch branding. Nice watch, they called this one the 3810.50.06, it came on a leather strap. After a failed earlier service in about 2015 by a local watchmaker who knew nothing about the Dubois-Depraz chrono module, I had it serviced by Omega in 2018 for about $950 CAD. Took about 6 months and the chrono minute hand fell off 2 days after I brought it home. Sent it back, and 4 months later got it back, and 3 days later the second hand stopped working altogether. Returned it again, 3 months later it came back after they gave up on the original movement and put a brand new one in at no (additional) charge. Still working fine but I never wear it, just keep it for nostalgia. Interestingly the warranty card "dealer stamp" is the Omega head office address in Biel! Nice watch but I wouldn't pay big $ for one, as others have said it's not really a "true" Speedy (whatever that means!).

There are plenty of greats write-ups on “reduced vs. professional” out there on the interwebs, including here on OF that will tell you everything you need to know
