Upgrading 1861 to 3861

Hello All,

My friend has the hesalite 1861 and asked me if I think upgrading to the new 3861 Sapphire Sandwich is worth it. Honestly I didnt have an answer for him. Sure the movement on the new speedy is chronometer certified and offers alittle more reliability in terms of time keeping. But I dont know if I would tell him to sell of his 1861 to make this move.

What do you all think? Is it worth it to upgrade?

Which does your friend prefer the aesthetics of? I have to say I've been quite impressed by the new bracelets looks and comfort.

Having owned both versions, my preference is the newer 3861, the aesthetics, upgrades and the very comfortable bracelet make it a winner for me.

I don’t think there’s a right answer to this.

I wouldn’t ever “upgrade” for better accuracy - if a second or two a day makes a difference, you need an Apple Watch or some kind of radio controlled thing.

For me, my watches are linked to memories or the places I’ve worn them and the things I’ve done with them on. That means more to me than a different clasp or an applied logo.

I own both. I think it is a matter of personal choice. I would not see a pressing need to upgrade. It is nice to have a hacking function. I went Sapphire on the 3861 so nice to have hesalite on the 1861a.
If I was buying a first watch / wanted a new one, then I would try to stretch to the 3861.
...and can you ever have too many ;0)

Would I walk around the shopping centre proudly proclaiming to myself, “I’ve got a 3861 on my wrist instead of a 1861?” No.

If only the 1861 and the 3861 had tritium dials and hands. 🙁

Not to mention that the new 3861 also has the most coveted DoN Bezel 😉

On a serious note… I didn’t realize the bezels were interchangeable. I’m sure many will be upgrading their 1861s to DON bezels when the chance arises 😀

Aren't these new DON bezels now restricted by Omega on a 'return basis only', just like the various LE dials?

According to Lewis WatchCo, yes. He was using them for his “vintage” builds but no longer has access to freely order them how he was.

If we're talking about movement alone, my 1861 runs 5+ seconds fast per day while my 3861 runs 1 second fast. The actual power reserve of 3861 clocks in at around 64 hours which is noticeably longer than the 1861. Plus the addition of hacking function, if it matters to you.

As for me, it's not about the bezel or the applied logo or the accuracy or the power reserve or the bracelet but for that stepped dial.

On a more serious note, I would wait until the bushing issues are sorted before I buy or trade for a 3861.

has anyone ever compared the 3861 DON bezel to an original vintage one? I'd guess yes, but I probably missed it.
