Good evening fabulous forum folks

So, I was thinking how best to frame this but lets just get to the point...

It was my 50th last week and I had been looking for a decent 1974 watch for the occasion. I've been searching for a Seamaster Cosmic but seemed to just miss out on them sadly. Then I came across a 1974 1012 Seamaster, blue dial, looked great but was on an auction finishing during my night time. Popped a bid in, inadvertently won it and then the next day some nagging thoughts crept in. What had looked fantastic late at night did not look so good in the morning

I know, I know, the cardinal sin of not doing enough research beforehand which leads to post winning research - the worst.
Well, long story short, I cannot find anything to support what this watch claims to be - this clearly sounds bad so I am turning to your expertise to help me out.

It is probably easiest to post the listing - you can see the description, some very clear photos, and of course, what I paid for it
It hasn't been delivered yet but is on its way. I am hoping that someone here is able to shed a bit of light and confirm whether this is good or an almighty mistake.

For context, I have a fair amount of modern and vintage watches and have made some greta purchases along the way - not really sure how to decipher what happened here but I feel it is not my finest nights acquirement.

If you are interested, my watch can be found on insta @crownandbrew

The link to the listing of the item in question is here (I can post the pics if that is easier - just let me know:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27636431...uid=C4igMdR7QjC&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It is returnable however it will incur double sets of duties

Any info, help or advice you can offer would be very much appreciated!!!!

Many thanks in advance,

Aitch 😀

It’s a redial I’m afraid and the movement looks to have west/water damage. Possibly suffered some water intrusion at some point, which case the corrosion to the movement and damaged the dial, leading to it being refinished.

Happy belated birthday.

You will want to return that. Double duty is a far better “noob tax” than the purchase price of that piece.

The forum rule of thumb is to post photos instead of links, so that threads can have archival value. Not just a poor redial, but the movement is looking extremely rough, with pitting and severe rotor rub. I also don't think that case-back is correct for the case, 166.0117 seems to be a completely different Geneve.

"BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL MILITARY DIAL UNTOUCHED CONDITION."

Absolutely false. Liar, liar, pants on fire. :whipped:

Not only that but the watch is in horrible condition!

I didn’t even notice the title or description. The ‘untouched military dial’ is either extreme ignorance or more than likely as this is a dealer, a completely dishonest attempt to deceive.

It's a Dial, and it is in a certain Condition, everything else is false

Maybe I should be reconsidering my willingness to purchase on eBay…

Thank you all for your swift and detailed responses (and belated birthday wishes) - this will be being turned straight around and sent back.

Also noted the preferred forum conventions.

As Scarecrow Boat mentioned, better to lose double duties.

I feel suitably annoyed with myself for the moment(s) of madness that led to this - lesson definitely learned.

Thanks once again

I can’t figure out how it is that having a “birthday” watch specifically, is more important than buying the best watch available, in spite of it not being made in the birth year. The selection available to you is reduced to a few watches. In this instance, you might have ended up with the best of a bad lot! Muddled priorities, in my view.

+1 on above. And with Omega you never know date delivery for sure without Extract which is not avail. So it’s always a guess anyway.
If you really want birth year watch get a Seiko the year and month are on Caseback. You can even get birth MONTH too, if this would please you.

Yeah, I agree with @Canuck. It’s not as though you are born and your proud family rush out to the nearest watch store to buy the two day old babe a grown up watch.

My first watch was when I got my child size Timex at about the age of eight. As a teenager I had a Smith’s watch and I didn’t have what anyone on OF would call a decent watch until in my late thirties I splashed out £9.00 on a Rolex in Bangkok, which the market seller assured me was indistinguishable from a real Oyster 😉

It happens to the best of us. I’ve bought some truly terrible crap watches, but I was able to sell them off to @Duracuir1 since he doesn’t know any better.

After reading the sellers Ts&Cs I was expecting an outcome like this.
After reading their feedback history it confirmed my thoughts.
I would not buy from this seller, but it's water under the bridge now.

The watch has a number of significant issues as noted above and it is not a day/date 166.0117 (as per caseback).

Sellers return policy is confusing (putting the onus on the buyer?).
Buyer changes their mind, therefore no blame on the seller.
Buyer returns for other reasons (not as described, faulty, etc) and returns then get difficult.

Shonkey is a word that comes to mind.

A seller to steer well clear of.

Sellers do that so buyers will avoid giving bad feedback by offering a no hassle return policy if buyer just says changed their mind. Its a warning sign to avoid the seller I agree

Since its a eBay buy hopefullyyou paid via PayPal then check it out when it arrives and if it is a heap of shit as suspected then send it back and get a refund form PayPal as goods not as described

If you read the listing, it indicates a 30 day return policy. There's no need to force a return or claim it is not as described. The OP is totally safe IMO. He can just initiate a return through eBay.

Still, it's a hassle and apparently there are taxes/duties to pay. Next time, just post on the WRUD thread ... no bidding.

You should be able to get a refund on the duties (at least you can here in Canada) if you prove that you returned the item.

I'm not sure about the countries involved, but it looks like the watch was sold in the US. The value is less than $800, so I don't see why there would be any customs duty to pay for the return.

Yep, I think a refund request due to change of mind will be the most straightforward to complete. No need for any back and forth over who, what, where etc....
Hopefully it will be simple enough
