The watchmaker I typically go to messaged me today and offered a significant discount on the asking price for this watch. I only have the one picture right now - I snapped it when I was in his shop without any hopes of buying this a few months ago. He is going to send me some more pictures later today.

Based on this (bad) image, how does everything look? Any red flags that jump out at you? Price is $3,500, and this would be a major purchase for me. I'll post more pictures when I have them. Thanks so much, OF!

Looks nice enough for 3500, but I'd really want to see that the caseback and movement number match. I bought a watch like this for just about the same amount a few months ago, and found a -74 caseback and 28.0M movement when I opened it up :/

Thank you for the reply, I'll be sure he includes a shot of the serial number and inside of caseback.

Based on the photo, it looks like the lume has been removed from the dial. Is that true?

I don't recall if the lume has been removed or if it's just the lighting. Will try to clarify. Thanks Dan!

I found out the watch also comes with a 1171 bracelet and 633 endlinks, but if the lume has been removed like Dan suggests, I'm assuming I might want to wait for a better example? The serial number is 32xx, which lines up with the reference according to Speedmaster101. Here are some more pics:

The uncased dial looks like it has lume. You can see texture on many of the hour markers.

Lume or not, it doesn't look bad (to me though, I think it does have lume that is just so very slightly faded). With an original 1171 bracelet and in its condition, $3500 is pretty good for a wearer.

n.b. many -71s have a greenish tint to the lume rather than yellow; this one appears so.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I decided to pass on this Speedmaster. I don’t know if it is the timing with everything that is going on with crornavirus right now or the watch itself, but it didn’t feel like the right time to pull the trigger for me.

What about telling people where it is for sale as you are not buying it. The guy might need to put food on the table at this strange time in our lives and there might be someone here who would buy it at the price being asked.

He had other buyers in line behind me, which is why I had to decide relatively quickly.

Plot twist, I wound up buying this watch. He texted me on the Monday after I had last posted and told me the other buyer had backed out and it was available again. I couldn’t bring myself to turn down the offer a second time.

I’ve been very much enjoying getting acquainted with my first Speedmaster, and wanted to post a pic along with thanks to the members who assisted me in the purchase.

Nice watch for a nice price- I assume it’s fully serviced (since your watchmaker had it), so if that was inclusive of the $3.5k, I would say you did very well.

Thanks everyone, I'm very happy with it!

Yes, was serviced about a year ago, so he said it should be another 4 years before another service is needed.

In the newer pics it sure looks like it has the nice greenish lume from that period. The hands being slightly yellow is a little unexpected. But great deal for a step dial and a 1171.

Thanks! Do you think the hands might be replacements?

Here is my quick attempt at a lume shot. The hands and markers seem to fade pretty evenly in around 5 - 7 seconds. It does seem like the hands might glow slightly brighter initially though. Maybe tomorrow I’ll see if I can get a better picture with my camera. By the time my phone camera focuses, a lot of the initial glow has faded.
