·Since the watch was featured at the 1945 Basel fair, I think it is likely that this was also the year when the dial design was first released.

·Agree really cool. It's up to 5 different case refs now that I've seen this dial appear in 🧐So avant garde for the time - in the 40s they were already in the 60s! Maybe they thought it ugly back then so it never caught on and went into mass production..

Or maybe since it's a prototype they added that number to more clearly identify which of the handful of prototypes it is.

·Odd indeed. Some Polerouter Subs (Gen 2, 2nd Execution) have a similar marking but on the inside of the caseback to indicate bezel color variation. Not sure how thatight relate to this reference. Could there have been some type of planned minor variation necessitating a 1, 2, or 3?

Anyhow there's no way to know if the extra digit is related to the dial, or if the dial came with the case originally. I guess to start would need to track every other example of this case ref that can be found, and see if any others have the extra number below. The fact that the hands don't match any other example so far, and are a mix of blued and silver, and lume hands with no lume dial, isn't an especially convincing starting point in terms of this being a factory configuration IMO.

·There's no indication from UG these are prototypes, it's just a nickname being loosely thrown around. We have UG archives pics of these dials in two different gold cases, but no UG archives pics for steel cases. Doesn't mean they couldn't exist, but we don't have any documentation from UG. I think this is the first time we are seeing these dials in this paticular case reference, the other steel examples are Spillman. Not sure if this reference is also a spillman case? I don't know how to identify the makers on SS cases since they don't have the hammerhead.
