Looks lik
- MK3 was also sold to the public with no numbers on the caseback, and there are some prototypes with a 7 digit number so they can be distinguished from the others;

That's interesting - would they still have had the FS on the back without numbers - I have this case & caseback:

If it falls into the category you list then I might build it up into a complete watch.

Also can you confirm the name, author and ISBN of the book - I thought I had it bookmarked somewhere but I've lost it?

Finally... does it tell anything about what strap it was issued on?

What's the strap, please?

That seems to be a MK2/MK3 case but with the caseback of the MK1 -864 106. Strange....

The straps on the photos are all similar in leather black. Still havent find a reference but will look further.

@filmir Thank you for contributing to this thread.

To be clear on page 6 you show an alleged third case style which you are claiming as a prototype?

It would be nice to get legible images of the book pages you are referencing as well, as they are too blurry to contribute much to the discussion.
Cheers

Maybe an italian collector can help with the translation. The prototype are the MK3 with serial numbers on the casebacks with 7 digits.

The one I show on page 6 probably isnt a UG case. On that page the one from @jccjr is a MK3 according to the book.

This would be a prototype (big serial):

The strap is a custom order from a guy in Canada, you can find him on Instagram @wristwatchme. He makes some amazing straps at very reasonable prices.

It does make me a little bummed that I sold this one a while back, I always suspected it was very low serial....

Looking at this auction the backs are interchangeable - a 107 back on a Mk1 and a Mk 2/3.

Mine came as a set on Ebay but I obviously have no other information on provenance. My assumption was that it was spare parts from a workshop but it's not based on any concrete information.

It would be interesting to point the author of that book at this thread.

Just spoke with him. Roberto said your case is a V2 with a V1 caseback. He found interesting the fact that there were no numbers possibly meaning they were being sold on stores since the beginning.

The prototypes with high serials he said belonged to vendors who presented the watches to raillway companies.

I will send him the thread link

To be clear, are we saying that the shop-sold ones had FS on the back but without serial numbers?

If you are in contact, I'd also like his opinion on what this is. On balance, I'm expecting him to say it's a redial.

Very FANTASTIC topic, my mane is Roberto trombetta and i wrote "IL TEMPO NEI TRENI" ITALIAN RAILROD
They are always available to talk about Italian railway watches trying to explain the characteristics and differences. I have been collecting watches for about 30 years and I have written this book about my experiences and found documents.
Universal geneve there are 3 types. + 1 prototype with 7-digit serial number ..
Sorry avotu my english not so well...
Best regards
Roberto
