How much was it out of interest?
I've never seen a UG buckle that looks like that before.
Here's a 14mm that I just recently bought....
I am really sorry, but these looks fake to me, there should not be anything between the 'U', it is ugly and 'Brute' thus not explainable...
Again, sorry for my humble opinion, I have authentic SS UG bucles and they are crisp and without the filling inside the 'U'.
Now, If someone doesn't agree with me, it is ok, I respect all your opinions !
Cheers 😝
This is a known example in 14mm, with the material between the U, rather than the "empty" U style being posted in some of the 16mm examples in this thread (and other smaller sizes as well). The "filled" U comes in SS and gold plated. You can see them in UG adverts and materials, will include one here.
As an aside, I was just talking with someone who felt these filled U 14mm SS buckles are the "proper" style for 50s/60s sport UG watches like stainless Tri and Big Eye, because they are used in promo materials by UG at that time.
Personally I am not crazy about the 20 to 14mm or 19 to 14mm taper, and it also very much limits strap options, so I prefer the "empty" U 16mm stainless, which allows for a very wide range of strap options, and I prefer the thicker strap size at the buckle. But that's just me.
i think you are maybe referring to me ! (Still some buckles in stock by the way...)
Fully agree with you, these plain buckles are not fake at all, they are just less « seen » on the market recently. They were installed mainly on 70s sports models.
My opinion is, it looks fake.
It looks like the logo is genuine, from a type 1 14mm buckle (1950s), but it has been put onto some aftermarket 16mm buckle and heavily polished to try to disguise it...
Obviously, the 16mm demand a higher price in the market than 14mm, so it would make sense from an "economic" point to try this...

I’m hurt you talk to other people about this stuff, B. I agree with you, though, @olivierw
.....and also because I have a NOS example in my hand 😁
My research confirms that this uncommon rallye strap was offered an as option with the Big Eye Compax in the mid 60s. It is fitted with a “Type 3” buckle as you can see.
