Well, it appears that this is not going to have a happy ending. I sent the watch back at my expense for the seller to rectify after he stated that it was a simple mistake and no deceit was intended. A couple of weeks ago he sent me some pics of the rectification and it was still obviously very different. which he admitted to.

About a week ago new pics were sent and all looked good. Today the watch arrived to work and I was ecstatic but did not have the time or location to open during the day so did so when I got home. The joy was not long lived, when I unwrapped the watch from the packing the back came of the watch and I am unable to screw back on because the thread in the case back has been stripped. I immediately sent a mail and received a reply. Both are below.

Does anyone know if the thread can be repaired, I really wanted this watch and would like to try and find a solution as I don't think a case back will be easy to find for this model?

My mail:
Hi,
I would like my watch and my money back. I received the watch today and when I got it home tonight I unpacked it and the back came off. Your wonderful watchmaker has managed to strip the thread on the back case and Damage the main case thread. The back will not even screw on. Please transfer the money into my account and ship my Seamaster back to me and I will ship this watch back to you.

The response:
I listen your nonsense complaints about the movementI spent 100euro for this watch (changes movement and shippin)
and now you want back te money?

you give me a seamaster 300 "destroyed" not the watch is on service bezel will be replace
I did what you want and now the watch is your - dont send me the watch back
my watchmaker is a good worken dont make this damage
you have too much advantage of the goodness of a person
case close.

The pics

Sorry about all this Pete!! There could be a chance to re-thread but not sure how much metal needs to be threaded on both surfaces and what that would do to the fit??

Are you & seller in same area/country? Contact your lawyer as it doesn't seem seller wants to do the right thing.

Disclose seller so we know who to avoid.

The movement is OK now but the case and back is an even bigger problem.

A better pic of the case back:

This is a 2998-61 so the odds of finding a case back are slim to none. Bugger🙁

His reply to you was definitely NOT in the spirit of this forum. Have you spoken to the mods regarding the forum member?

Sorry for your trouble. I hope somehow miraculously you find a solution.

Case can be laser welded and then redone to get it back in order but of course this affect the originality of the watch. Anywho let us know who this person is and we can all figure out what is going on.

Absolutely shocking, I was saying to a mate just today how much I now prefer this forum because of the 'spirit' of those involved, expose the person is my vote, he/ she is a disgrace to collectors. I am personally pleased the mods have installed more regulation on the SC to avoid people behaving this way.

Barking, rocco in the UK might be able to help in terms of laser welding then re threading

I find it quite shocking that this has happened, especially after the watch was returned and it's still not right.

I have to be honest as well and say that not regarding the initial movement swap as deception is understanding in the extreme. I can't see how it is anything other than an attempt to deceive.

Given the several chances the seller has had to rectify the situation I think it's time to name and shame.

Rocco owns and operates Watchworks in Bristol (http://www.watchworks.co.uk), he is a great guy, a real Omega enthusiast and I really rate him, one of his specialities is laser welding work and their results are genuinely amongst the best out there. I strongly recommend him, I've had a few watches done through him and have never been anything less than delighted, I can PM you his email if needed?

In the mean time you have 180 days to log a case on paypal I believe so I would recommend getting in there quick and logging a case if you are still within the time frame?

Personally speaking - I despise the culture of 'whispers in the dark'

There has been enough quiet burying / 'fudging' of the verifiable facts, relating to current, & past, ( now expelled ), Members evidencable record, of selling watches with less than consummate professional integrity.

I have always believed in the strong cauterising effect of transparency, openness, & public daylight.

Who sold you the watch ?

Another factor to consider is what chances do yo have if you return it of getting a similar watch for the same price? I would PM the more knowledgeable members of this forum for an assessment, it may be better to keep it and fix that issue than to return it. I say this with a disclaimer that I don't know what I'm talking about regarding this particular watch and it's value to you or in the market. 😉

I think I am OK in understanding the value and price. I would really like to keep the watch but if it can't be rectified to a satisfactory level it is not what I want. I collect for me, not to sell. Cheers

I saw that one. It has a fair bit of corrosion and I suspect would require some laser welding as well

Cheers
