True Confessions (of a New Guy)

Once I started to get an interest in a Speedmaster Professional I joined the site. That was a while ago and I didn't post anything for a long time. Then once I got serious and bought a Big Box complete set, I really started to enjoy and appreciate this site.

I was interested in the Sales corner and was fine with Forum rules. No posting until 200. Damn, I had two watches (actually three, maybe four) I wanted to sell. However, I've just hit 200 with this post, and dammit, the watches are already gone! I sold two through Adventure Rider, a motorcycle website of all places (it's a haunt of mine,) and a really nice Longines pilot's watch was traded in a fair deal for my SM300m chrono.

So, I guess I'm not one of the dreaded "Join just to sell a watch" guys. I've really learned so much in my brief stay here, "I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship."

I may put a Monaco up for sale, but quite honestly, I'm more inclined to give it to my sister who covets it. We'll see. Nonetheless I am happy to be a member here and hope to learn more.

Regards,
Chris aka High Hope

I'm with you on that slow boat to 200.. thought I have nothing to sell, so I'm in no hurry. And I second that - I'm learning so much here as well! And also gaining an appreciation for some things I had no idea existed.

So win-win!

Now, how about a pic of that Monaco?

OK, if you insist. I think its a complete set, I bought it new from an AD many years ago. I wasn't prepared to sell so I don't have all info now, but I believe I have the receipt as well.

I can certainly second that too!

I say give it to your sister if you think she will take care of it. What are you going to do with the money? Buy another watch? Life is short, and it is better to give a watch than to get a watch. I was reminded of this by Larry's recent touching post.

Yes, I read about Larry's brother Izzy and definitely feel for him, and believe that he did the right things for his brother over the years. I kind of know I'll give it to her, but maybe not just yet. Thanks for the advice.

Congrats, I have been here since 2017 and still on 140 posts 😀. Hopefully this year I will reach 200 posts. The site is great and I try to participate whenever I can, but it is hard sometimes with so many expert around.

Congrats. Looks like we joined around the same time, but I'm still on the slow road to 200, but I don't mind. I've learned a lot in my time here, still a lot to go.

This was nicely written. I also joined mainly to learn more about Speedmasters. In my limited time here so far I can say that it is a great group. I can also say that I will never be nearly as knowledge as Speedmasters as the vast majority here. And I’m fine with that. If i know 5 Percent of what some of these guys know I’ll be pretty damn happy.

Agree with all of the above. I landed here earlier this year researching Speedies too, and was pleasantly surprised that the Omega Forum actually covers all watch brands. I’ve never found a need to frequent other watch forums since I found OF

I too joined mainly to learn more about Speedmasters, especially the one I owned, a 105.012-66. From what I learned it led me to post a WTB, start a few threads, and buy a couple of books. I enjoy the vast knowledge of the people on the site and their willingness to share that knowledge, I enjoy the camaraderie and I even enjoy the bad jokes.
Yes, the site has probably caused a flare up in my descent into hell ( see thread ) and a desire to purchase another Speedmaster... time will tell if I can resist the urge.

Too all the newbies, I've never met before.

When I joined back in 2015 I wanted some information about a Speedmaster I'd had languishing in various junk drawers since the mid to late '70s. I had done just the barest research and was really confused about what I had; it was a 145.022-68 with a service bezel. The first few answers I received to my query blew me away with the depth of knowledge some of our members have and the willingness they have to share it.

The enthusiasm for fine timepieces and the history behind them rubbed off on me. I'll never have the collection some do, nor will I have the knowledge some do but I do share the sense of a common passion and I thank my lucky star (I can only afford the one) for this virtual community. OF makes the entire internet a better place.

Being able to sell a watch or two in a sort of safe environment without fee is something that should never be abused. This site is for watch enthusiasts first not commerce.

Oh - that's beautiful!
Nice that you can share a love of watches with her as well. It's a special connection for sure.
