I’m afraid your pics aren’t great (including in the eBay listing ) and are a bit inconclusive.

A cal 561 with black inserts should have onyx inserts.
The easiest way to tell is that onyx inserts have a ridge along the length of the insert and the inserts have depth when viewed from the end.
Painted inserts are flat and have no depth.

The date window is faceted to answer @BrokenSkunk ’s other question.

I did my best with the equipment that I had. It’s really tricky to get good pictures of a watch. I’ve been told many times that lighting is key. Unfortunately I just don’t have the right kit.

Yes definitely faceted date window. Sorry meant to respond to that bit.

Will double check the markers. Thanks for the tip on that @Peemacgee! Learn something new everyday on here

I’ll PM you.

However, other members are you able to shed light on how we tell the difference on painted vs onyx? I haven’t a clue. The watch was listed as onyx when I bought it by the dealer but doesn’t mean a lot given the rep of vintage watch dealers 😂

Onyx inserts are set into the steel base. You can see it in first 2 photos.
The central ridge “roofline” can be seen on the 3rd photo. On the 1 and 2 markers

Certainly no expert but I have a very similar pie pan with 561 and your inserts look like my watch which is also onyx. I just got out a loupe as I was thinking I should check mine!

Whilst we're all aware that this isn't a sales post, may I just say that @reggie_v is an absolute gent. This lunchtime we spent a very pleasurable 1/2 hour in a pub roughly half way between us and I am absolutely loving my new pie pan. It's taken a long time to hunt this one down.

If I had bought anything from @Reggie (which I clearly wouldn't have as this is not a sales post) I'd have no hesitation in recommending him to any buyer. I've seen the black faced 168.005 in the flesh too and I can confirm that (to these naked eyes) it's flawless. I didn't think I'd like the black faced version, I was wrong.

Hi All,

Now I know this is a deeply personal decision but as always having a bit of a prompt from other like minds can help give you the push you need.

Thinking of trimming the collection down, either one or two pieces.

I know the answer will be don’t get rid of any but I really need to free up some funds in all honesty so in a world where 1 or 2 pieces had to go what would they be?

If I’m going only on what I wear I’d keep the gold deluxe and the no date 14900.

Going by rarity I should probably keep the black dial but I don’t really wear it. Plus both of them being retailer signed dials they’ve got a bit of something extra. I suppose I should be thinking with heart not head and not worrying about value retention / rarity. It’s difficult not to though with the popularity of pie pans increasing recently.

Any input appreciated

PS this is not intended as a sales post - I’m still quite new to the forum so still trying to get up to the 200 post mark to sell on here. Will list on ebay eventually when I’ve decided what to part with. Hopefully this post is within guidelines as just asking for opinions. Any issues moderators just give me a message.

Thanks all in advance!

Roughly how much would you be after for the gold one? Where abouts are you based? I'm from London

It has been a valid discussion about which of @reggie_v watches from a collection might be retained - but let’s not turn the vintage section into the private sales section please gentlemen.

@reggie_v doesn't yet have sales privileges for the sales section (and to be fair to him the discussion hasn’t really strayed into that area) but you can always discuss options by private message - just not in the open forum.

Thanks for the fair response @Peemacgee ! 😃

Been enjoying the discussion and has helped me narrow things down.

Noted and we’ll respectfully keep things within the forum rules.

Working hard to get to 200 posts and enjoying being a member! Nice to be able to contribute and learn along the way

https://ebay.us/m/kyAl7o Here you go 👍🏻 dunno if it’s a bit steep but it’s a starting point
Just as an FYI, this violates forum rules. If someone wants your Ebay link, you can send a PM.

If only Omegaforums had a private messaging feature. Maybe @Trev and @dsio can add one in the next upgrade.

No trouble. I’ll remove the link 👍🏻
