Post some decent detail pics of it while you have it in hand, maybe we can give you an assessment, your watchmaker can take the back off and check out the movement. Details of the hands and lume plots, the coronet, the “Swiss” at the bottom of the dial. The serial number and reference number under the lugs, and shots strait in to the lugs to judge thickness (was it polished down). Those are pretty much the Rolex OPD high points to check
Yes I thought of exactly doing that seeking your peoples advice but I wouldn’t expect a response so quickly when I’m in the shop making the deal. I probably will try though, maybe I’ll ask him if he can put it away and give me a day to think about it. I need to pace myself as well. I know he is really into Cellini as he was telling me how he sold one for a handsome profit but I can’t expect just to drop mine down and walk out with something of my choice the deal isn’t all on my side.

Hey could I ask a question I have never even thought of. I’ve been collecting watches for years but most of them have been mechanical or quartz as I’ve been a very unsophisticated collector and haven’t gotten automatics until the last few years. Anyway I always keep my quartz running. As I’ve said I rarely wear this Cellini but always keep a fresh battery in it even though it’s just sitting in my box. Is it better I take the battery out while I’m not wearing it? I wish I had thought about this before.

I hear you. I gotta say I really wouldn’t call them dodgy. This constellation I got worked out nice. It’s just they are trying to get into watches but didn’t school themselves properly. It’s probably not the greatest place to go but it is worth stopping buy as they do make some good picks. I trust the two guys running the shop which is important. This sixties constellation I got for 350 needed only a service and one part of the clasp. I will say it would be much better if my knowledge was better, I don’t begrudge them at all and they are not out to scam anyone they just make some bad choices but have some very nice things mixed in.

Honestly, I hope they are working 24/7 to educate themselves on vintage watches. Otherwise they will unwittingly rip off uneducated customers, and that will come back and hurt them. I find it strange someone would go into business buying/ selling things they know absolutely nothing about.

I agree and last time they were asking me questions and advice. I had to play it up a bit so I could get a deal on the constellation but I am a poor choice to help them in business. Still, it’s interesting to see what they picked up as they are very willing to negotiate. They don’t just sell watches they have coins and other collectibles. I must say they have some nice coins but that isn’t my focus of course.

Hello, I haven’t seen this watch face to face but this is a place in my area that does exchanges. He really wants gold for watches, I have some ounces but I’m not trading them. May bring my Cellini down. I’m going to try to put up this picture. I know it’s poor quality but if anyone has any info or can tell by this crappy picture any knowledge would be appreciated. Like I said I have not seen it in person but might take a ride to see what’s up. I can’t tell if the crystal is wrong at the date could be the poor pics. I’ll ask him for better ones if I do decide to follow up. Sorry about the double pics don’t know how that happened. He does have a few but I think the others are blinged out and I’m not feeling that

If anyone does care to comment I think this watch is listed at 3,600. Again I’m not expecting anyone to give a detailed opinion on this blurry picture I’ve just been scouting out a few places and looking for basic feedback

Looks like it’s a two tone with gold dial- not a combo I would like, but some people do. Probably late 70’s judging by the dial and open 9 on the date wheel. Price would be about right for retail but it has to be in great shape, jubilee with little stretch, date code on bracelet needs to be within a year or so of the serial range.
The first question you need to ask yourself Walrus is what style Rolex do you like. Do you like two tone, or do you like stainless? Do you like a Jubilee or do you like an oyster bracelet? Do you like the fluted bezel or do you like the engine turned bezel? The dials changed on these over the years and the subtle changes can also change the way you feel about the watch.
When I started looking at DJ’s, I looked at pics of every model and narrowed down what I like to a specific model and date range. I like the 1603, step dial (piepan), all stainless, with either slate or silver dial, engine turned bezel. I would take a fluted if the price is right (which would make it a 1601), but I now know what I like from doing my research.
On these it’s all about your taste, so make sure you like it before you start the conversation with the seller and don’t buy it just to buy it.

Yes, very good feed back thanks. That’s basically all I’m doing is looking around for what I like. There is no harm in going to look at these things but I can’t be to desperate to unload this Cellini. This guy is much more knowledgeable so he will have the advantage. Basically I appreciate every piece of info I receive here. Also just going down and presenting my watch would give me an idea of how things will go as I haven’t tried it yet. I don’t even have to be stuck on a Rolex. Just a nice watch I can wear more frequently than this gold Cellini. Anyway it’s good to have some options see how they play out. JW you did say the price was right retail what did you mean by that. I doubt it’s in perfect condition plus the old when has it been serviced question will pop up. Thanks again very much

No harm in seeing what the value of your Celinni is to a dealer, you may be horrified and decide to sell it privately, or he could make you a fair offer that makes it easy to unload. Bottom line is that if you don’t enjoy wearing your Celinni, it’s woethless sitting in your drawer.
Dj’s hover in price between $3-4K, condition and rarity is always a variable either up or down but typically that’s the range. Try them all on and see what you like. You have the advantage as you aren’t in a rush, you have a commodity to move, and there are literary millions of DJ’s in the world so another will always pop up- maybe even in a combo that strikes you.

Well the guy dropped the price to 2,800 but really wants gold for it. That’s exactly the price I Was offered for my Cellini but that’s prior to mailing it in for final inspection and I have no doubt they would lower the offer substantially once they make the final offer. I have the gold but I don’t think it’s wise to trade such a thing for this watch. Gold is having a nice run and I bought it was the plan for a 15 or so year hold. I’d really like to buy a watch with bitcoin, which also fluctuates in price. I hold that but have enough to use it as currency with plenty left. (Please excuse me I’m not bragging just spitting out thoughts in my head)

Is this the two tone Datejust? Did you take better pics? Do you like the watch or are you just trying t to find a good swap for the Cellini?

Your gold is an investment, a DJ isn’t. I would keep that paid for with play money and not investment money

Better photos are needed, but at first glance $2,800 is probably ok for the 16013, if you like it enough to have it serviced and then wear. It's not enough of a bargain to buy as an investment, since it's not a particularly desirable DJ variation.

Ya thanks. I wasn’t thinking of it as an investment. That’s why when the guy was asking for gold as trade I said no. It just ends up as another pass for me. I don’t think I’m even going to take the drive to look at it. Thank you, all input is appreciated

Just looking for a little feedback on this. Only a pic right now, offered at 1,000 don’t know if it’s worth a look

I believe that's a fake. Coronet is wrong, hands are not tapered, end-link is wrong, etc. Price is too good to be true.

Yeah TBH I threw an offer of 800. It’s one of those local sites where you meet people at a jeweler or police station. I just wanted to see what he says. Thing is it looks like a stock picture. Maybe from DH gate or one of the other fake sites. Says he has box and papers but that means very little to authenticity anymore. The cut of the case looks strange to me. When I saw the price at a grand I really didn’t bat an eye, it’s gotta be fake. Does Rolex even make a case of that shape. I’ll be very interested to see his reply, I’m not going to check it out in person but I’ll play along for a little bit, maybe get more pictures. I bet you it’s a flat back quartz.

Ya but just looking at it and the fact he is asking 1,000 really makes me shake my head. I would certainly have it checked out if I was going to get it but this can’t be what it claims
