looks like a fun trip and nice photos. How did you convince the shop to let you try on half a $mill of watches? I'll be there next week. I'll want to try on 20 watches as well.

Oh this was probably spread out across a half a dozen stores or more! (And likely closer to a $mill due to the 5711, FPJ, and Rolex chrono)! And it's not even all the watches I tried lol.

Is there any flexibility in their prices? Any room for a 20% tourist discount?

Prices stated in-store are usually tax-in. As a foreigner and assuming the store participates, you'd be eligible for an immediate 10% duty free discount. Unlike Europe where you pay up front and only get a portion back, JP stores just take off the 10% up front.

You're ready halfway there!

This is true! I was only really considering one piece, and I got the sense prices were relatively firm. Maybe I should have tried to ascertain that more in general. But I don't think it would hurt to ask as long as you are respectful and reasonable. FWIW, the yen being so low gets you almost another 10% ; )

For the used shops, they are most certainly open to haggling. At least, a little bit. Cash is the 'special word' for any negotiation.

And being respectful and reasonable is key.

Generally very little room for bargaining in my experience for the big stores in the city eg the ones in Shinjuku like Watchnian, or Best Ishida. The range is usually very good though, and the condition generally excellent especially for modern watches. The weak yen is definitely a plus now.

You have to show your passport though at the time of purchase to get the tax waived at point of purchase. The Visit Japan Web site gives you a QR code to get the tax waiver, and you theoretically don't need to show your passport and just need to show the QR code to get it. IRL though, most shops ask for the passport, especially for big ticket items like luxury watches. The Visit Japan site though is still useful to pre-register your immigration stuff - you then get a QR code which allows you to breeze through immigration much quicker (useful when you're landing after a long flight with tired/cranky family - trust me, I know)

I had 2 trips to Japan last year - spring and winter. Came back with a total of 3 watches😗.. Wife rolled her eyes thrice.

I’d take a beating if she let me buy 3. That Habring is nice. Good tips with the QR code. Registering now.

I also really like the Habring.

Habring has done specials for the Japan market.

Nice watches. I wonder if some Tokyo shops would have stock of vintage Seiko watch parts or even dials. I ought to visit.

Yahoo Japan would have them available for purchase. You can use 3rd party agents to buy and ship them to you if you live outside of Japan. I've been pretty happy with Zenmarket & Buyee; bought replacement crystals, BOR bracelets before.

Nice pics and if anyone is considering a trip.... just do it (as Nike say) as it's such a great city to shop, eat, see the culture/buildings and just experience in general, especially right now with Yen so low!

After 3 trips to Japan so far this year (and 5 watch purchases) I even recognize some of the watches and display cases from Nakano Broadway (which IMHO is the BEST spot for watch shopping/spotting in Tokyo!). I'm not sure why the Universal Value shop has had that 2998 for display only for the past 3 years or so!

Which was your favorite store or area to shop in?

Thanks for the mention of those, but I can't find dials. I read that there are shops keeping vintage parts which they don't sell online.

I can definitely say that on the 3rd floor of the Nakano Broadway shopping center I have seen vintage dials for sale, in particular Rolex, Zenith and Grand Seiko. I'm not 100% sure but I believe I've seen some Seiko too.

Belle Monde is one of the stores, but their website only seems to show complete watches so you might want to email them..... https://bellemonde-tokyo.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US
