Being a member of the “lightweight class”, I was also very disappointed to learn that the ICO removed this class from the Olympic rowing program. 😒

Well, a Danish team managed to win bronze, very happy for them! 😀

Well Canada has 11 medals so far, and all of them have been won by women. Hopefully the men step up soon!

This comment also leads me to ask a general question on how to rank countries based on tally of number of medals.

I am of the opinion of ranking countries by number of gold medals first and foremost, then, by number of silver (especially if there is a tie on number of gold medals), and so on.

I know that others look simply at the total number of medals to rank countries.

What are your thoughts on this one!?

You could also go by medals per capita, which as an Australian is my preferred approach

I favor a points system for tallying...3 for gold, 2 for silver, 1 for bronze.
Having said that, I find the Olympics medals table and the jingoism that goes along with it a little tiresome. There, I said it. I enjoy watching the Olympics (although not so much this year) but I enjoy it for the amazing athleticism and skill...I don't much care about the nationality of the athletes demonstrating it.

Agree with you! These rankings really lead too often to trigger nationalistic sentiments (or, rather, to exacerbate these) instead of celebrating the true spirit of the Olympic Games.

I think the fetish over medal count is unseemly, it harkens back to the Cold War era when the USA and the USSR were duking it out for political purposes. There are new entrants now, but the game is still being played. "My medal count is bigger than your medal count". What the medal count shows is how much money is shoveled into the Olympic system in any particular country, which really doesn't mean much in the big picture.

Your method is what the IOC does, and it’s fine with me.

Does MotoGP use remote sensors, with nothing attached to the athletes?

Of course anyone who wears a Fitbit has that technology, so clearly it isn't new if it's a worn device.

I sent Crispin a message to confirm with him that he’s not wearing a heart rate monitor for the information that is being broadcast, so this is being done remotely. I had read that this was done by the use of sensors on the exposed skin. If they are able to do this with riders in full leathers and helmets, I would be interested to understand that technology if you have details...
Well in that case the xbox one was capable of it from its launch thanks to its camera. Still nothing new from a technical perspective. Obviously it does not work well with helmet and Kangaroo leather. 😁

So..
Archery is leading some Olympic innovation at these Games. It's the first sport to have live data on athlete physiology as they compete. In the lower left of the screen you can see the heart rate of the archer as they are shooting
New to Olympic Games but not to sport (the part I asked about the meaning)

They apparently do this with remote sensors focused on the skin
Not a new technology either. The cameras used at Olympic Games are a tad better than a 8 year old Kinect so expect it to be more accurate but that is it. BTW Kinect accuracy was in general already good on static subjects, which is the case with archery

If I am fair, it is the first time I hear about this usage in sport so what is new to me is the technology they chose to get the heart rate: not the technology itself or the fact they show the heart rate. To be clear, I am not trying to diminish what they did. It is a nice idea and most innovations are only clever usages of known technologies. To close this digression:

I expect we'll see more of this sort of thing in future Olympics
👍

Yes, that was my initial point before we went down this meandering road. Glad you have finally arrived where I started. 👍

Great job!!

But looking back at the rowing schedule, there are still some "lightweight" races listed, no? 👎
As a matter of fact, it even seems that France scored a Silver in the females' lightweight double sculls race today.

The women's individual event is now over, and once again Korea is on top with the gold, ROC takes the silver, and an Italian takes the bronze.

Gold medal match went to a one arrow shoot off. Korean shot first and landed a 10, but not terribly close to the middle, so definitely beatable...

But, pressure of the moment took it's toll on the Russian's shot...

I think a big congratulations is due to everyone involved in bringing this Tokyo games to fruition.the dreams and aspirations of thousands of competitors brought into reality and it’s not the mainstream sports for once getting the headlines,it’s the less well known sports that give the Olympic Games their true meaning, the stories behind the people are often inspirational and heart warming.everyone of them deserve their moment of fame and they will forever be Olympians.well done to all.

Played tennis last night - mixed doubles for the first time in 18 months or so, had a quick shower, whipped up a pizza (dressed up a frozen pizza in reality), and we got ready for the archery...

Watched a match with a Korean, who shot lights out. Three perfect scores of 30 in a row...

Pretty hard to beat that. Next up my friend Crispin, shooting against a German archer who had taken out the #1 ranked archer in qualifying from Korea. This Korean is only 17 and had already won the gold in the mixed team, and mean's team events. So the German was shooting well to take out the #1 seed, and we knew this would be a tough match. In the end, Crispin couldn't pull out the win:

The 26's in the first two sets were a killer. The 7 he shot in the second set was not a great shot - pulled the arrow through the clicker and then held onto it for a couple of seconds, before releasing. I can only assume his sight wasn't where he wanted it to be when the clicker went off, and he felt he didn't have time to let the shot down and start again (there is only 20 seconds allowed per shot). He shot better in the last 2 sets, but couldn't pull back even. So in the end Crispin came tied for 9th place overall, so that is his best Olympic performance.

He has a bronze medal from a world cup, and another from a world championships, so he can go further, but the Olympics is a special sort of pressure for the sports that have the Games as the peak event. For some sports the medal is nice, but I think many NBA players would take a pro title over a medal. The same would be true for golfers, tennis players, etc. But for a sport like archery, the Olympics is the thing you want to win.

So the remaining question is can Korea sweep the gold medals? Well, the way the one Korean was shooting it was certainly possible, but in this case it didn't happen. Many thought the big threat to the Koreans would be Brady Ellison from the US, who has arguably won more things in the last 10 years than any other archer, except the Olympic gold. But neither the US or Korea were even competing for the medals at the end, as they were all eliminated before medals were shot for.

An archer from Taipei took out the Korean, and went on to shoot in the bronze medal match, which he lost to a Japanese archer. The gold was between an Italian and an archer from Turkey (who had taken out Ellison earlier):

Gazoz has been a strong competitor for a while now, so not a total surprise, and a good win for him certainly.

Now that swimming is coming to a close, along with some other sports, the Games kind of take a shift for me. Started watching the track events, so all I can say is go Andre! 👍

The French athlete below, Jean Quiquampoix, just won gold in 25 meter rapid fire pistol shooting, and I am actually curious to learn what watch it is that he is wearing in the pic. 👎

For the travesty that was the 2012 semi-final, this feels very good...
