I asked for that one but not sure they will get any as I would want that one before the rising sun.

That Panda seems like it's the most popular and bringing the highest prices on the secondary market. I've been trying to buy a unworn/new one without giving up my first born, it's been a challenge. The black one seems like it would look nice in person, I would consider it, especially at MSRP. By the way how much are they at OB retailing for.

I recently picked up the Black/Gold version and agree that it looks much better in person than the pics. Compared to my Apollo 11 50th, the Tokyo’s black dial, gold subdial and red accents just pops more visually.

Very Nice. I used to have a black Daytona and this one is giving off that Daytona vibe. And I mean that in a good way. Congrats and Enjoy.

Haha funny you should mention that. It sits next to the 116520 black in the watch box 😀 And agree it has the same vibe.

Anyways, back on topic! Let’s see more pics of the Rising Sun! Also, anyone picked up the whole 5-piece set when it was available?

The 5 piece would be really fun to own, it would make for a great 7 day rotation. With the Panda and Rising Sun get the two extra days for their cool factor.

Just as a follow up, the Tokyo Speedmasters seem to be trickling in, was just offered the black dial one from an OB but want the rising sun one.

This is super-wild!

This appears to mean that even with Japanese OBs having been selling to grey / resellers the past 1.5 years, a few colorways sat in Japan unsellable for over 3 years, now being reallocated to non-Japanese markets??!!

I called my OB manager and inquired after this. He confirmed that indeed “about 11 months ago” maybe “around 8 - 10 units total, max” were offered to “just a couple of OBs” here in the states. He said he had no visibility on whether other non-US markets received any.

Very odd indeed. Hard to believe that 2,020 pcs of several designs haven't been able to find homes after three+ years.

The ones that have landed at US OBs are priced at $7,800. Assuming no discount and adding in nominal state sales tax puts the OTD price around $8,500.

There is definitely at least that many if not more offered and not 11 months ago only. I was informed that there would be some available a couple of months ago and was just offered the black dial one. I am sure the big vip's all got one if they requested.

That's about US$7,750. Pretty good price.
Definitely a fair price for a brand new one. Depending on color you'll pay a grand or two higher on a unworn one. Except of course if you're chasing the white Panda, unworn your looking at $4k to $6k more. But still much more reasonable than a White Daytona on the Gray market, lol.

Any “big VIPs” likely got theirs in 2018.

Otherwise, the OB manager was not suggesting they were only available to buy 11 months ago, but instead it was around 11 months ago that just a few watches were made available to just a few US OBs. Again, this OB manager said it was only 8-10 total pieces in the U.S.

If they had sat on the shelves of Japanese OBs for 2+ years, then from “about” 11 months ago on US OB’s shelves it wouldn’t be surprising if they also sat a few months.

It seems that only a couple of colorways were still available in Japan / made it to any US OB. So far reported red and black/gold? Wouldn’t be surprised if green were also amongst the last to sell (or to have not yet sold).

The panda and blue dials appear to have been sold out since relatively early on. I don’t recall anyone having proxied one from Japan in the last few years, and I’ve not seen one (particularly Panda) with a warranty card later than 2018 - though surely there’s an exception

The U.S. OB that sold my Red one did mention they only recieved two and the other was a Green one. I agree with you, one would think the Panda's would of all been sold in 2018. But in my quest, I have come across a few with 2019 and 2020 warranty card dates. Watchbox is advertising one as a 2021 which I assume means a 2021 warranty card, but don't know how accurate they are in discription.
Interesting the Blue was one of the ones to sell first with the Panda. They're bringing about half the price of the Panda and it seems the Rising Sun is bringing more than the blue ones on the gray market. Personally I would prefer the Red over the Blue, but I'm a sucker for White dial. I guess the Blue might be considered the reverse Panda of the bunch, probably why it sold quickly. I wasn't a big fan of the black and gold, but after seeing @burnrbr]'s wrist shot, I would consider owning one.

My disorientation: since the release was Sept 2018, I really meant I hadn’t seen any past 2019. Not that I’d be surprise to learn that either a few slipped into early 2020, or - more likely from my armchair - that a few made it to grey/2ndary seller prospectors with blank warranty cards.

I think the general blue dial bump was still hot in 2018, and on top of that the “reverse panda” look was quickly digestible to the broader public. The red bezel had to grow on a seemingly smaller group of collectors, based on its relative colorway rarity.

also, not until more recently did a blogger 🙄 give the red bezel been an entirely ridiculous 😵‍💫 and slightly offensive 🤔 nickname that - to its credit - has really caught on in the west!

does seem there’s a good argument that the red bezel could become more collectible as time goes on, ala Alaska Project-like plot arch

Totally agree, but if history repeats it self the Panda will probably remain the most sought after. Rising Sun probably a close second. But only time will tell.

Blue one is not doing as well on the preowned as the original gemini can still be had for a reasonable price. There are very few Panda speedys and the cheapest one is in the 15k range so no surprising this one is doing well.

When the pieces came out in 2018 there were none brought into the US for anyone, I remember asking some of the super vip I knew who wanted one and when they asked the OB weren't even aware of them let alone be able to get them. As time went on, covid, etc. and then they did not sell out. At the last OB Managers sales meeting, the availability of these pieces were discussed and that is how alot of the most recent ones have come in. I asked for the Panda and the rising sun and was only offered the black dial piece which didn't work for me as it is dual tone. Seems like the rising sun piece is just slightly above msrp so is still good value. I wonder if I should have gone after the 5 piece set when they first came out. In hindsight seems like a good buy similar to the missions suitcase. 1st world problems for all of us.... At least my snoopy is under the tree for me to open in a couple of days..
