Are fellows bringing some shiny toys for us to oggle too?

Ace!

Yes - the conversation has been around "lower value, but interesting" - I understand theres a limit to what the directors want Nicola and Steven wandering around with for both their safety, and the safety of the lots.

Steven is a collector geek too, and has promised to bring some of his personal goodies. 😀

On behalf of the international OF members working 9-5: why do you put this up on a Tuesday? 🙁😜

Ahh Tuesday is key!

I've run events for the last 10 years.

Monday and Tuesday you can get private venues for free.

But Monday no one will come.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday private rooms have minimum spend, and I can't cover £500-£1000 out of my pocket, and ultimately the 10-15 of us wouldn't drink that much!

Weekends... people do family stuff, and whilst lots work in central London, few live here.

So Tuesday is a night where you get people show up because they're in the city working, the private meeting rooms are free, and everyone is a little more relaxed than a Monday, and ready for a beer.

Marketing science magic! 😉

@tyrantlizardrex says 'All horological goodies welcome, there's no snobbery here ( the exception being replicas and fakes... ain't nobody got time for those).'

I say... under most circumstances, I would completely agree. However I do have one 'fake'... let's call it a 'replica', or a 'homage' that I'd beg an exemption for; a contemporaneous Breguet quarter repeating pocket watch copy dating from around 1830. It is chuffing bonkers, horologically and aesthetically rather cool (imho) and a thing of great beauty. But not a real Breguet. Breguets were faked, even back then and whatever else this thing is or isn't, it's a nice French gold pocket watch from the time of A-LB and in his style. If I can find a waistcoat, Albert chain, slippers, velvet or paisley print smoking jacket and my pipe, I might bring it along for a giggle. It is the sort of 'watch' that one has to dress up for, in order to carry it around, again imho. Look forward to seeing you on 21st.

Surprises are great... but not the ones where someone you don't know, and who's not shown they are a watch collector, registers for the forum, registers for the GTG, shows up, and instead of a collector turns out to be the guy who wants to take everyone's watches home with him.

This may seem a little on the suspicious end of the spectrum, but I didn't get where I am today by trusting every friendly fellow with a fun screen name 😉

You've got to put in a little to get a little out... share with the group, or reply to the email I sent you earlier if you'd rather not post your collection here... either way, I need to be able to satisfy myself that you're a collector rather than someone with ill intentions.

Nothing personal, everyone gets the same treatment until they've been to one get together.

And setting an avatar on the forum would be a good idea too 👍

Didn't know this was going to be an issue at a public event in a venue with so many people. In the middle of City of London. Ok check your email.

It's not an issue unless you make it one.

The event is private, the venue location is private, the room we will be meeting in is private, everyone who comes will need to provide photo ID on arrival, and check in.

For very obvious reasons, there is a need for sensible behaviour on all sides - if you have a problem with that, you don't have to come, and either way, you may want to adjust that attitude a little bit.

We're all friends here, but we got that way by respecting each other.

Nice collection 😉

See you on the 21st.

Buddy come on man. No attitude here, I don't even know where you got that from. I just was curious as I have been to some of these before where no questions asked. Usually being a public place, whether a watch meet up or a deal from chrono24 or whatever is enough to suffice.

But if these are your rules I'll respect them as I have done with my email. No attitude no problem here. I was merely trying to explain why I didn't immediately jump to showing my collection as a knee jerk reaction. From your POV I kinda get why my message came across as creepy etc so I was explaining why that was my first reaction.

This is where typing falls down as a form of communication! ::facepalm1::

Looking forward to meeting you on the 21st, and seeing some of that collection in person. 😎 👍
