Three watches for £500, Good buy or money pit.

Hi all, long time since I have posted here, but I was looking for some advice please. I have been speaking to a man who inherited three watches.

A 1971 Geneve, think it's a 165.099 on a 1481 but not seen inside, I like the collaboration movement, and the watch is ticking but not tested. To me, this is why I am considering the deal.

Then two others that I am not sure of, one looks 50's and the other with the sub dial the man believes to be WW1, though I am not too sure and think it more likely 30's to 50's again.

All I have are the photos and assurance all are ticking, but not tested, as it is my intention to put all watches right, I have a price to service all three at £700 plus whatever is needed.

None have original bracelets, though I only suspect the 099 ever had one.

Firstly I'd like to ask if anyone knows anything about the other two watches? And potentially if the subdial has a military connection?

Secondly, I like and enjoy watches, but I like to buy sensibly and not throw good money after bad (been there). The Gentleman is asking for £500 for the three and I am looking for advice on if we think this is a good deal or not. It seems to be okay to me.

To some it's not a lot of money, but it's always nice to know you have bought right to start with.

Any help is most appreciated.

Pass.

You're looking at GBP500 plus GBP700, so GBP1200 (minimum) to own three watches that will never be show stoppers, two of which are in very poor cosmetic condition indeed.

Save your hard earned for one good watch in fantastic condition, or try and get the Geneve for GBP200 with another GBP200 in mind for a service. Of the three that's the only one that could scrub up well

Maybe rather quality over quantity would be a good start.

As @cristos71 said, you should always factor service costs to your overall budget if you want to wear a watch on daily basis (vs in a rotation among many others)

Good luck with your hunt, and patience is key... As much as the problem for many of us, at least me hahaha ... But it comes little by little

That's great advice, thank you. Sounds obvious when it's said to your face Let's see how I get on with the Geneve then!

Thank you @LesXL appreciate that. I think I did get a bit excited at the prospect of three rather than the quality of the pieces.

To answer your question, personally, I would not purchases these 3 watches. The money you are talking about here could be invested in ONE more interesting piece, rather than 3, to me, unappealing pieces.
