Hi all, hope all is well, I am new to this site and this is my first post so feel free correct me if I am posting this in the wrong place.

I have come across this seamaster 165.002 and just wanted opinions on it and whether it is original/genuine and what not. The serial number on the movement doesnt seem to be very clear and looks like it hasn't been stamped on properly to me, and the two screws above it are different colours (one looks silver and the other pinkish) I am not sure of this is normal or not, I am a novice in this and would appreciate some help and input.

Dial has pagination and the case is quite polished/soft.
It’s genuine but unless it’s very cheap I’d keep looking.

Oh perfect thank you very much!! Its up for about £485, it caught my attention as it has original papers.

Also, apologies if this is a simple question but what is pagination in regards to watches and how would you be able to identify it (im still learning).

Sorry I meant patination. Ie the dial has yellowed and has significant spotting. Personally I think that’s worth £300 at most.

As an indication of what you see on this forum for sale, I’ve sold both of these in the last year or so.

I sold this for about £625 I think. It had it original bracelet and was mint, but needed a new crystal.

This one was £395. It needed a service but again was in very good condition with a very, very good dial.

Dont be swayed by boxes, papers, dealer warranties etc. Far and away the most important aspect is the condition of the watch. Primarily the dial, closely followed by the case. Boxes and papers are nice little add on if the watch is good, but a crap watch doesn’t suddenly become nice just because it has papers.

Those are some nice examples they look very good and it makes sense about not paying too much attention to the papers etc. I wasn't sure if I am allowed to purchase from here as I am new, therefore didn't really focus too much into looking through whats for sale.

You can DM sellers to buy, you just can’t list items for sale.

Also, kee an eye on the ‘recommended eBay’ thread. Some nice UK watches are added there fairly frequently (I’m assuming since you quoted GBP you’re in the UK)

These are a pretty common reference in good shape so definitely worth being patient and scoring a nice one with a clean dial, they will be in the recommended thread about once a month or so

Thank you very much. Are there any other references that are similar to this one I can also keep an eye out on?

166.002 is the same just with date.

165.003 and 166.003 (date) are similar with slightly fancier lugs.

165.001 is very similar.

135.011 (and 136.011 with date) is similar but manual wind.

165.020 (and 166.020 with date) are similar.

All the above are good starter watches

in general, when buying a vintage watch, you should learn some basic information about that particular model, for example by google "omega ref 165.002". After knowing about that model, you can compare it with the one you wanna buy. The case should retain it edges, the surface should get original finishing. On the dial, the hour markers should go along with the hands (in your case, the hour markers have lume and black strip so the hands should also get them). The movement should looks good with all the screws in their place and the teeth shouldn't be pointed. The buckle in this case is cheap fake from china.

Thats good to know thank you I didn’t really think of matching the hour markers with the hands. Just to clarify, what is meant by the teeth of the screws not being pointed?
