Thoughts on this Longines Chronostop?

I think a good indicator would be to look at the average age of the Hodinkee followers and my impression they tend to be on the younger side. I see their interests being on the affordable brands. They started out with the UG, Heuer, and then migrate up into the Rolex. I now see many being interested in the Seiko. I believe the mechanical watch interest is alive and well with the younger generation..

Seiko is making a big move into the US market. They opened a boutique in Beverly Hills and now in New York. All unprecedented since they only recently started selling in the US 15 years ago

Please explain. I have three 30+ year old Seikos that I bought new. One was a gift, one bought at a Seiko outlet store and another at a department store.

My guess is he meant Grand Seiko. I wish the bracelets were a bit better, because for my money they make some of the best dials in the business.

Not sure about Seiko has the best dials but I will say the Grand Seiko is a beautiful watch. The dials have great depth while many dials on some high end watches look flat to me...Just my humble opinion.

I wasn't specific but referring to Grand Seiko and their new Beverly Hills Boutique. Seiko was introduced to the US in 1955 and Grand Seiko in 2010. Actually 19 years ago, time flies!

Prebid already on USD 3.750 with another day to go! Would not be surprised to see this end in the USD 10k (incl fees) region. Fees are 27% BTW

What’s clear is that if anyone was hoping to get this one under the radar, it’s not happening. (Aka we’re not letting it happen).

I only hope whoever gets it is part of an on line community or another and will share the serial number so that the regular mortals who once formed Longines’s core following can at least enjoy getting more info about it.

hi Syrte yes hopefully the new owner will share info on his/her newest buy with the watch community. I read your previous concerns re-future popularity of vintage watches and the posted responses and I think they are valid concerns but in my opinion all will be fine. living and working in the Philippines for 15 years as well as regular trips to Kowloon has shown to me that vintage watch fever is alive and well among all ages in that region. in all my days hunting for watch deals I think it's safe to say that Kowloon is the undisputed watch capitol of the world. I have never seen so many vintage and modern watches in one area in my life. loads of young people, both locals and tourists crowd the area shopping for watches including the huge night markets. yes there are the expected afternoons in Hong Kong and other part of asia when all one will see is younger people sporting smart watches but the same can be said for here in Connecticut. however once one spends a bit more time in an area hunting for vintage watch treasure is when you start to run into like-minded people doing he same, and believe me they are everywhere. some of my most prolific competitors hunting down interesting vintage watches in Cebu city were 20-something year old collectors hot on the trail for anything interesting. my wife and I along with some of our collector pals regularly attend the massively popular coin and watch shows in Kowloon and the place is jamb packed with enthusiasts of all ages looking to snap up exotic and vintage watches.

I think the "cool" factor with vintage watches is going to bring us seasoned collectors some serious competition by the younger crowd for interesting pieces down the road 😀

I was going for it but didn't want to spend more than $10k all-in 🤔

I think the winner was a phone bidder against me so bidding directly is 22% - 2% cash discount, 20% commission

I recognize that black dialed, tre tacche, stop and gos are rare birds; but thats a lot of coin for such a small one.

While I can comfortably wear this 32mm watch, yes the size vs price was a big concern

So 13200 USD (if 20% commission) vs 13970 USD if the online buyers premium of 27% applied.

Gotta say we gave it a lot of good publicity.
If the bidders had missed it on line because it was a small scratched up picture during the holiday season, they could not have missed it here

Very cool @LarryG I love how someone just splashed the dial with radium
on the bottom one. Must have been a true tool watch.

Ziggy W’s military watch book suggests some military use by the early 32 mm variety, if I recall correctly. My small one was sent off in july 38 to baume, London....

Nobody here seemed to mention the original Breitling superocean (sans bezel) that was 2 lots before this. Also went for a pretty penny but might actually have been a steal? Have seen these with bracelet for $20k+
