Sounds like you made the right decision if you had misgivings about it. I very nearly bought a display back mid 90s model with a really nice colour lume dial but I knew I preferred the solid case back and I wouldn't be entirely satisified, so I waited longer. I think the good thing is that once you know what you want, when you do come across it you can move quickly on it.

For reference, my circa 1993 3590.50:
Strange. They managed to put mine in more or less the right place in 1971.

Actually you can not say its luminova until you check it. Some tritium can be really white-ish as well.
But as some said here these speedys from 90s are a lot. They look often very attractive with nice patina etc and its a matter of price and what you like. I was looking for one as well and the problem was not to find a great one but to decide do I like more yellow, creamy or pumpkin patina as you have every possible options on those. Check for example Davidoff Brothers and you have few there and all are fine! And the question is if you like this process of finding and thinking what you like in aging watches or you prefer to have a new one and write own story for it. And the new one is a stunner, thats for sure.

I would wonder if excessive polishing would happen to the underside of the lugs, resulting in the spring bar holes being positioned where they are! Seems to me to be a highly unlikely scenario!

Agreed, this was my takeaway from things too. The seller refunded me my money today so all good on that front, although I’m glad I didn’t keep it.

I suspect I will go down the 3861 path!

You can find nice 3590.50 Speedy's which have been well-taken care of.
I think 90's Speedy's are the sweet spot between the expensive '60s '70s, and the new "white" model. "White" as in no patina.
For me, as close to the original, with heselite crystal and engraved case back.

Here is one I had

I’d have to agree with you. Even better would be a long “S” and long “r” dialled 3590.50 - again with nice patina on the tritium hour markers and hands.
