I was once at a wedding standing next to my mate's girlfriend who was wearing one of these limited ed sneakers (both of them are totally into them). Was laughing so hard at someone's joke that I spilled fruit punch over them said sneakers and both of them flipped out simultaneously. Fortunately, we are still best mates till this day.

You remind me!

Whenever people of my generation bought white sneaks, people went out of their way to stomp on them to get them dirty.

I guess my contemporaries were a bunch of assholes.

Saw this posted on another forum. The best part is right around the 5 minute mark, where someone guesses the price of a vintage Daytona...

The watch world is it's own little world - I think sometimes people forget that.

Cheers, Al
That was so much fun to watch! Thank you!

The ‘85 Jordan’s were the hot shoe when I was in high school- I remember them well from the school yard. I wore Converse- burgundy Chuck Taylor’s.

I'm just at the far reach of a millennial and when I first saw the Speedmaster I thought it was absolutely hideous and reacted the same way the people did in the video.

I've learned now that if I am ignorant about something I probably shouldn't give a strong opinion about it, as I am likely missing the picture.

Much better to be open minded and develop an informed opinion rather than mouth off and look like an arse. 🙄

Hi all,

Well back in 1985 I was in New York on a business trip and then short holiday and bought a pair of those Nike Jordan's but no one back then had any idea what they would be worth 35 years later. Very much how the early Rolex Daytona's were not popular and poor sellers when first released and it took decades for them to reach the now crazy prices they fetch.

But back then and even now I buy things I like and to use them I would no more put a pair of sneakers in a cupboard to remain unworn then I would put a watch in a safe rather than wear it. I really only got back in to watches after I was no longer able to keep big dogs which were my passion and to be honest even though that was a mere 15 years ago now watch collecting and watch collectors really have changed a huge amount since then and IMHO not necessarily for the better either. The craze and hype for certain watches is really mad IMO and why and how so many are prepared to pay so much over retail for a stainless steel watch baffles me as I think it is pure insanity but it is the world we now find ourselves living in. I just happen to think that for the crazy over retail prices for some of the so called hot or hyped watches their are just so many better alternatives that offer so much better quality on not just the case but the movements and the looks to. But each to their own and of course everyone is free to spend their money as they want to if they really must have that named brand watch everyone else wants to.

Actually, I kinda agree you'd be a douchebag to pay $250k for a PN Daytona. ::stirthepot::

Not bad, but would be better with a photoshopped Hooters shirt.

On the sneaker thing and scarcity, back in the 00’s I wore Simple suede sneakers for casual wear- I had 3 colors, I loved them. When I learned they were closing shop (now they are back in business but were gone for many years) I bought an new pair in each color that I liked on close-out, they were around $70 MSRP and I think they were something like $40 on sale. Flash forward 10 years and my feet had changed a bit with age, I had worn out my last pair of old Simples (which were well formed to my changed feet), and busted out a NOS pair from my closet- and discovered they pinched on my pinky toes- poop.
So I put them on eBay- and those suckers sold for around $150/pr! I was shocked.

When I wonder over these scenarios, I often circle back to this thought:

It’s interesting how on this forum the cost of things is discussed so openly and intelligently, yet we also all seem to gloss over that the expense of things is relative. The expense of a $250k watch to me is inordinate, but to an Oligarch it’s nothing - even though the cost is the same to us both.

It’s a thought that would in a perfect world be more easily implemented in our discussions about the desirability of watches. We often hear some version of “it’s a great watch, but I wouldn’t pay $X for it.” But for the next guy, that $X may be only one week’s salary, in which case maybe who wouldn’t pick it up for only a week’s salary? Similarly, the first guy was maybe really saying “it’s a great watch, but I wouldn’t pay 3 months salary for it” -> which both of them might agree on.

Oh well.

The relativity to income/wealth is part of it, I agree. But in the case of the PN, it's more that I would get the same enjoyment from various other 62xx references, which could be purchased for 1/4 of the price.

Thanks to Hodinkee and Aurel Bacs, many people don't even ask themselves what watches appeal to them, they just read blogs and start forum threads to ask which reference/variant is the most desirable.

I like some of the naive but honest comments in that video where someone said a watch (or strap) was ugly or cheap-looking.

In talking about Blancpain, I'm surprised there weren't any comments about how douche it was to engrave the bloody name on the side of the case. Or, maybe they said it and it was edited out?

Might as well tattoo Blancpain on your forehead.

It’s still in bits, on two wheels and jack stands and awaiting a bumper and tail light 🙁

It’s actually been waiting for repairs longer than its been drivable.

Kindof wish he'd shown them an early vintage Speedmaster and gotten their reaction to the visual and then cost.

Have to admit that Lange got me. Can't argue with design. Some things you appreciate more the more you learn. Some things you get right away.
