Longines: You just got your first job out of college. You are looking for something classy and professional to go along with your first real suit. You will one day own a JLC.

Damn! This described my wife!

Worryingly accurate in places. There has to be a PhD dissertation in there somewhere that explains what we try to present to the world through what we choose to wear. Women have jewellery - men have watches: and we continue to buy them despite the fact that most of us carry mobile/cell phones that tell us the time more accurately.

Tudor: You assert that the Black Bay 58 is what Rolex “used to be”. You take pride in the quality of the bezel on your Pelagos. You either never will admit, or say all the time, that you wish you had a Rolex.
Great post, many a laugh going though the list. However the Rolex/Tudor thing.....nah
I have a Pelagos and a Sub and love them equally.

It did give me some anxiety looking at the Tudor crown sitting on top of the Sub's bezel. I'm still not one of those people that says "I love all the scratches on my watches"

Universal Geneve not even on the list? I'm not sure if that's good or bad 😉

The writer of this article: you have a horology blog with a modest number of regular followers, believe that all the writing talent has left movies and have gone into non-network television, and dream in the wee hours of the night of becoming a staff contributer with "Billions."

Cell phones can suffer from weird failure modes. You might be near the edge of a time zone, and go back and forth between cell towers in different time zones, and happen to be in the "wrong" zone when you look at your phone.

That's true of course. Or we might be in an Apollo spacecraft when the computer is destroyed by an explosion, and all we have to time our re-entry burn are our trusty Speedmasters......
My comment was actually tongue in cheek. Although I feel lost without my phone, it will never take the place of the watch on my wrist.
The cell phone also has the important task of hosting the images of my favourite watches, so that I can enjoy looking at them anywhere.
