·Dear all,
This is my first time posting here so please be gentle!
While I am the very proud owner of a couple of more recent speedmasters, I am also a long time admirer of vintage moonwatches, especially the cal 321s from the 1960s. Unfortunately they have always been out of my price range around the £8-10k + mark.
Looking around however, it seems like I can get the correct and genuine parts to put together a beautiful cal 321 speedmaster with a mixture of genuine vintage and NOS parts for around £4.5k (not including a correct era bracelet or the assembly by a good watchmaker). My question is, is there anything inherently wrong with this, as long as I am completely honest if I ever decide to part with it down the line? I hear a lot of negativity around so-called frankenwatches but if all the parts are genuine and correct, I feel like it's a worthwhile thing to do to breathe new life into some old but beautiful parts.
Is this worth the effort or is it better just to get a full watch within my price range (even if it's not a 321 speedmaster). I understand that it would be more of a labour of love than a regular watch purchase, but I'm interested to know the thoughts of others who might be better informed than me.
I would unfortunately not be putting the watch together myself as I have neither the skill, tools, dexterity, or watchmakers knowledge, but I think for a parts project it might be a fun thing to do, with the potential for a) ensuring that some beautiful old omega parts get the usage they deserve and b) me getting a beautiful watch to wear and enjoy at the end of it all for a potential bargain price.
All advice welcome and thanks in advance!
