The authorities were able to recover a 1913 Liberty nickel from the crash site, which was given to his family. The family gave the recovered coin to a renowned expert who knew of the existence of the replica. This expert declared this piece to be the replica. The family put the coin back in the safe.

In 2003, the family brought the coin to a reunion of sorts of all five known 1913 Liberty nickels. At that time, photographs were taken of this coin and of the other four known specimens. Modern photo analysis showed that the recovered coin that was ruled a "fake" 40 years earlier, was in fact, the real thing.

Imagine making a replica THAT good, and only making ONE. That craftsman had herculean self restraint not to make a couple more. Though with so few real ones in existence, it's doubtful he would've have got away with it.

I have heard that people are buying real rolex movements of ebay or some other sites and putting them into the fake cases. With technology nowadays they can get access to 3D laser scanners and fine CNC machining, so faker case would be pretty close to the original. Let say they drop $1-2K for the 3135 movement and make Hulk..... they would definitely get their money multiplied.
Also, friend of mine told me the story, that he seen a SD for sale on Craigslist for $1200. Person who was selling it was a jeweler, who ended up buying it some time ago, as real watch and got fooled. So he was trying to to sell it, to recover some money.

Don't read too deep, friend. I was told this by a fellow who lives in Hong Kong. His personal experience, I imagine, and obviously a humorous exaggeration.

That's me...

Sorry, I'll have to assume that all the watches you post are fake from now one. 😁

You know its interesting the folks on this site....what I said was I learned ON THIS SITE a long discussion about fakes and the consensus was the wearer the best way to tell real from fake. I don't know of this is true or not (i certainly don't look the part), but you all fine experts deemed it so.
Well most of the time I’m wearing a Beatles or Grateful Dead shirt with my watch henceforth it must be fake

Hello all, new forum member here from Canada and I just bought my first omega off eBay and this thread is getting me a bit anxious. I think the watch I bought is genuine although it did not come with box or papers but the 59 million serial number seems a bit old for the model (2221.80). Is this genuine or did I get fooled?
Thanks

I wonder if the replica was ever made.

Think about it. You start a rumor that you commissioned a replica. Then there is always doubt in a potential robber’s mind whether it is even worth stealing.

Brilliant.

Awesome thanks for the peace of mind Archer. On a more philosophical note, if a fake is a perfect replica is it still fake (ignoring intellectual property rights/design/trade marks etc.)?

Good question. Reminds me of a Steven wright line:

"I woke up one morning and discovered that a burglar had stolen all my stuff and replaced it with exact duplicates."

I guess the websites could be populated with photos of real watches and what you get in the mail is nothing like what you see there. It is far easier to accurately fake a website than make a convincing fake watch, and it’s not like integrity is an issue for any of these people.

I would imagine that this would be very likely.

The moral of this story is that even "renowned experts" can be fooled on occasion.
I am reminded of the notorious incident involving the so-called "Hitler Diaries", in which a set of handwritten journals, supposedly by the Fuhrer himself, were declared genuine by some of the most prominent specialists in the history of the Third Reich, including H. R. Trevor-Roper, an enormously influential British historian. The "diaries" were, of course, a complete fraud.

Yeah, but the same doubt will be present in a potential buyer's mind, and then it isn't that great for the owner.

This couldn't happen today. Almost all rare coins are certified by outside companies that carry insurance coverage if found to have made a mistake. So both buyers and sellers are protected.

I've been told how to tell if someone in Asia is wearing a replica? They're wearing a watch.

My daughter's Grand parents came from India and my Sister-in-law's family came from Burma. I have never seen any of my Asian relatives wearing replica watches. No doubt the person who "told" you these things would conclude that my Peruvian wife must be an obvious scammer???

I can only presume that the advice you were given came from a 'Fakkin' 99 year old ex-SS officer, who's been hiding in Columbia since 1945! They'll soon find him in Hong Kong! 😁

Correct. Most locals from HK abhor fakes. It's the tourists and ppl from N America that snap them up.

HK’s a bit different from Beijing and Shanghai. It’s not as bad as it was though, not all where fakes but counterfeit items where very much more accepted.

So just wondering, is the reason why people don't really mind watchco SM300s because it's made of all omega parts?

So what if someone built up rolex watches the same way with all rolex parts? I feel like something's different there but not sure what exactly.
