When Omega introduced their Speedmaster Automatic 376.0822 in 1987, they never guessed it would be nicknamed ‘The Holy Grail’ by Speedmaster collectors and fetch prices between 20.000 and 30.000 Euro. We wrote an article on the Speedmaster Holy Grail last year, with an explanation of mainly the technicalities of this watch. The production number (believed […]

Wish they brought back that bracelet style. The 1450 is impossible to find at a reasonable price.

True. My hope is that they will revamp one of the current 'LE' bracelets to a regular bracelet. Almost anything is better than the current steel Moonwatch bracelet, as it is very outdated.

Thanks alot for another great Tuesday read. It really is a shame about the value. Surely a Speedy Tuesday mk3 Chuck M limited edition should be in order. One for every OF member should suffice.

Thank you for this. Very close to my perfect watch -- another enthusiastic vote for a reasonably-priced reissue.

Oh damn, didn't know this existed at all. Love the "digital" style numerals on the dial – they remind me a little bit of my Solar Impulse.

I was much more active on forums 10+ years ago. Back then I used to interact with chuck maddox. The article said he passed - when did that happen?

Oh trust me, this went through my mind a lot. But, and here's a big one, that movement is discontinued and there's no real successor to use. I know there's some ETA equivalent with almost the same layout/functions, but it isn't in line with Omega's strategy.

It lives on, just not with Omega. It heavily influenced the chrono used in lower end Swatch lines such as Tissot which looks uncannily similar to the 5100.

    https://watchbase.com/eta/caliber/c01-211

The Tissot chronos start at ~£750.

Exactly and that's the reason it wouldn't fit Omega's strategy. I would love to own a caliber 1045 Speedy, and especially the Holy Grail, just not at that price. For me, it doesn't make sense to buy the Tissot for example. I rather spend 2000,- on a Sinn 142 or similar with the original Lemania 5100.

Guilty as charged...much more grail than a 'grail' to me at least (can't find very many of these, by my count 5 and one was Chucks)...

Thanks for the article! For me this speedy is a typical and interesting case of collector's collective madness, there is no other justification for its price imho.

Very informative read! Funny thing is last weekend I came across a seller with many great pieces for fair prices and 2 stuck out to me because of the price. One was a royal navy seamaster (1970 I believe) and the other was one of these Holy grails. Both were priced to the moon and I had to go into a google rabbit hole and find out why. What a coincidence you post this Haha.
