I'm sure it's a nice gift, I just think it looks really cheesy and awkward for them to be holding what visually appears to be a cardboard box while they are standing on the podium. On multiple occasions, I've seen athletes awkwardly trying to figure out what to do with the box as they want to wave or applaud, etc. in their big moment in front of the camera. They sometimes end up tucking it under their arm. Just my opinion.

Not sure it's any more awkward than in the past...depending on the size of the flowers they were given...

I'm pretty sure Tokyo gave plush toys.

That was Beijing...2018

They were given the toy right after their event, then the medal at a ceremony later.

Olympic events are called off once again for the Fifth time because of the raw sewage being pumped into the River Seine
..as athletes are starting to become ill and withdraw from the Olympics,
that's so sad, it was my fear and very sadly it's now coming to fruition
🙁

The river is no doubt very dirty, but I've been reading a number of stories of a gastro bug going around the village, and even some hotels that athletes are staying in. Pretty sure one female Belgian (I think) triathlete who was ill indicated that testing was done, and when the results came back it wasn't E.coli, but a virus.

Fair bit of covid going around as well - sucks to work your entire life to get to a Games, and then catch something that kills your performance.

Well, those American runners completely botched the 4 x 100 relay. What a debacle in not being able to pass the stick cleanly. Very ugly at this level of competition. And disqualified to boot.

It's an ongoing issue with the US, men's team in particular. You can have all the fastest runners, but there's more to a relay than speed.

Congrats to the Canadians for taking the gold! Andre was battling a hamstring injury but still ran a stellar anchor leg to seal the deal.

I’ve softened my view on silver and bronze and everyone else. I’m quite competitive always have been and used to think winning was the only thing but my appreciation of these athletes even just being selected and getting there. To all of them they have fought hard and tried their best and I applaud them all, PB’s NR’s OR’s WR’s etc. Still have a special place for the Decathletes and the heptathletes. Go KJT.
London was amazing but I have to say I think the French have delivered to most amazing games.

Very true. Just as the US will always have Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, Calvin and Alvin Harrison, Shawn Crawford, and countless others. In the contest of who has had the most doping infractions in track, the US is the clear winner between our countries. USA! USA! Congrats! 😉

I didn't see any of the women, and honestly I was skeptical, but after watching the men, these guys are serious athletes.

Hahahahaha there are a couple of events that I wonder how they got into the olympics, this is one of them.
