Well, let's see. Subject to further evaluation: The Ranchero stays. The hobnail Seamasters stay. The 300 Heritage stays. The JLC Ultra Thin Moon stays. At least one of my dress Connies stays (and I have five and they're all beautiful). The Seamaster waffle dials should stay (damn, I have more than one of those too). And I should probably keep the '69 Speedmaster Straight Writing too. Damn it. I'm going to have to rethink this retirement idea.

I agree that this is the only sane option.

Retirement is out of the picture for me for a while…if ever. That said, I’m very content with my small collection at the moment. I get zeroed in on a watch as a daily and the Speedy fills that niche extraordinarily well. I thought my 52 Seamaster would do it, but I just can’t bring myself to make it a daily. Great evening or event watch though. And I haven’t touched my Bucherer in a month.

“He sat alone at his desk contemplating retirement. His advancing years troubled him little. The prospect of a long slow decline and a lingering death left him similarly unmoved. But what of the watches, he thought. My God, what of the watches? And then, depression set in.”

You know what'd cheer you up? A nice vintage watch in NOS condition.

My birthday is friday and I have a special watch coming in. oooo la la.
Mine, too, as we discussed last year. Happy birthday to us on the Ides of March!

We have too many house projects going on for me to get a new birthday watch, but I’m looking forward to seeing yours. Congratulations, and be sure to share some pics.

I think we have a new frontrunner for post of the year.
I'm just transitioning from attorney to writer as I prepare for retirement. My first book will be The Vintage Watch Chronicles. 😁

I'm going to be retiring in another couple of years. Up until now, I've been able to rationalize maintaining a decently sized collection which is overweighted toward dress Omega models since I'm in court and wearing a suit very frequently. When that ends, I'm going to have to start thinking seriously about paring down my collection to a much smaller number of "core" watches to wear in retirement. I don't think that I can get it below 5 though. I'll really have to start thinking about which models are -- God help me -- investment grade and which may continue to appreciate in value for me to justify hanging on to them. 🙁 And no, Erric, you still can't have the Ranchero. :whipped:
You should re-think this. Buying watches seems like the perfect retirement activity.

As long as I can sell a few and maintain a balance, Dan, you have a point.

And you have a point also. But I'm going to forget that I heard it. 😗

I think retirement for us requires part-time employment of some sort to support 2-3 nice watches/year, above and beyond the "one in, one out" mantra that we hear buy few can actually do....

Just got this from my daughter in Kansas. This is in real time, folks. She’s getting 3” hail at the moment.

Most of the time it's a non-event. She lives in a very sparsely populated area. Mostly open farmland.

Indeed, a vintage Omega is basically a job requirement so you can write them off.

I assume the horses go in a barn when there is 3" hail. I imagine that could do some damage.
