Just political correctness run amok. After Craig does his last appearance next year, I'm out. The new 007: Female, check, black, check, gay, TBD. No thank you, not interested.
... and Idris Elba as Moneypenny. 😉

Some people really want to be offended though, logic be damned.

Guys it is not a female Bond, relax. Even on the books there are several 00 agents. Before Bond there was a 007 that died or retired and Bond gets assigned the number.

If he is retired then someone has to carry the 007, it’s not basketball so they’re not going to retire the number!

Personally I think this is a very smart way to have a wink at all the polemic about a woman or a black man being Bond without affecting the character.

I think 008 is a left handed one arm midget and 005 is transgender.

Its all good!

I'd actually watch that, despite that Austin Powers theme going on

It would be a very dark affair with Ayoades Bond channelling the 'paid murderer' seriousness of Daltons Bond, while Poehler will only speak with a Welsh accent.
David's villain will only appear on the left hand side of the screen.

There is a long tradition of this in Hollywood - Jimmy Stewart was often accused of a similar thing.

She is not Bond. In the story Bond retires and his number is reassigned. She is not the first female nor the first female Black agent, nor the first time a number has been re-issued in the movies.

I fail to see how this offends anyone.

After this they are taking time off and a new Bond will be cast. It’s fairly obvious that after the reaction to this, and the reaction to Idris Elba being considered a few years ago as the next Bond, that James Bond will stay a white male.

Daniel Craig is in the film, he is the main character and star of the film. If you read my previous post in this thread I said exactly what happens. She is the new code name 007. Her character name is Nomi. Bond is officially retired and no longer employed by MI6 in this film and therefore cannot be code named 007. He is, of course, still James Bond.

Have to thank you guys for bringing some logic to this discussion. The overall reaction to this news has been disappointing, to say the least. I might be able to understand some of the backlash if Lynch was confirmed as the next James Bond / 007, but she wasn't. It's like some people can't grasp the fact that a woman (gasp) could take over for 007, even if it's only for one movie (that James Bond--played by a white male--is still in!).

I suppose part of the blame can be placed on the sensationalized / clickbait articles being written about the news. Many of them are even insinuating that Lynch will be taking over for Craig when he leaves. That said, there's really no excuse for this amount of outrage when even a cursory examination of the plot would reveal that that isn't true. The amount of men whining about "#metoo" and saying that the writers have ruined their favorite character is frankly disgusting.

Reading many of the comments on Instagram and elsewhere, I think a large part of the problem is that too many men see Bond as their idol and a role model, and don't seem to see anything wrong with that. I guess deep down, they all want to be mysoginistic alcoholics...

To be fair, at least early on, there was also a certain worldliness, sense of style, and confidence, both with foes and with women, that many men aspired to, and, while an idealization for sure, not necessarily all that bad either.

I’d say his age was not what caused many people a few years ago to have in the words of Bart Simpson “Have a cow.” It was unfortunately not remotely unanimous and it had nothing to do with the Dark Tower.

One could argue both instances are 'cultural appropriation' as both characters have been described, quite extensively, as having been white guys. Just my grain of salt on the mound...

Seriously. Bond != 007.

Bond == Bond.

007, as many have said, is merely a number, a codename.

There have been other 00's that were multiple people (one died / retires, the number gets recycled). There's only so many 00 numbers to work with, so obviously they have to recycle.

Actually Roland was never described in the book as being white. Only has blue like eyes(once) and vaguely like Stephen King once. Neither was Shadow in American Gods another time people freaked out over this.

Also by definition cultural appropriation cannot be claimed by dominant groups.

But sure.

That is true. There’s definitely nothing wrong with wanting to dress like Bond, for example. But I get the sense that a lot of men who are really outraged about this see him as a role model for all the wrong reasons.

I always wondered how many 00 designations there are in the Bond universe. Does it start with 000 and go up to 009?
