    Dear members

I recall a recent post by dsio suggesting patience and restraint when reviewing a new member’s first post or thread. (Not get angry! Bad for the heart.)

Perhaps we can all chip in here and list what we like in a new member’s intro and what we don’t.

Heck, the first time I saw the term « Post Farming » was here and what came to mind was: EF8B00E8-C7AA-48BA-BCD3-CDF47BD4BBE3.jpeg 2803612F-9DA9-4F8E-A6DF-2FDFD7F8C44F.jpeg
This morning I read a definitive DO. A very nice intro from @p_rover 4B16F9AB-94E0-475D-BFE0-A45740E23B76.png Above is my contribution as a DO.

A regular DON’T is one where a new member fails to provide us with an introduction and simply wants an evaluation of their watch. No more no less. Example (I made this one up). 986A49B0-0732-4A84-B049-B0AB42CC3B8F.jpeg Note the useless photo provided. The always helpful Dan S and watchyouwant will try their best but without better photos, including one of the inner caseback (for most Omegas) they will be basing their response, if any, on their vast experience.

So, members, what else can we add to the list of DOs and DON’Ts?

If this is duplicating an older members’ thread, let me know.

Sorry, I pressed send too soon :D

I had an earlier thread talking about a few collecting groups on Facebook (pocket watches, railway history) and one in particular is almost entirely populated by posters who provide a terrible pic along with a very brief “what’s this watch worth”. I am amazed by how many responses they get, and I’ve assumed that the FB group was created just to get first dibs on something before it gets to market. I think of this when we get those new members who come off as rude and entitled. They may have had a lot of experience with forums that have low standards. However, if someone spend a moment on this forum they'd quickly see that we are a community and not a valuation service.

That sword cuts both ways. How about a "do's and don'ts" for established members who think there is a gun pointed at their head forcing them to respond to newbies not familiar with the quirks of cranky old watch collectors.

@Duracuir1 I was raised to be polite and introduce yourself when entering someone's home, so I thought it appropriate to introduce myself before writing anything else. I'm glad it was appreciated.

DO check out this thread if you are serious about gaining knowledge and picking the best watch.

    https://omegaforums.net/threads/learn-how-to-fish.52603/

To the non collector who is simply looking for their next watch, spotting a redial, even one with serious flaws, is not even a consideration.

    I am still learning also.

Consider this. A1B1678B-4407-46B6-8433-21B468C0D207.jpeg Yes, your eyes will play tricks on you. I failed this one too. Learn before you buy.

HI - Just joined the forum. Introducing myself - 40 something watch fan / repair hobbyist from Scotland but now living in Australia. Came to hear about this forum after buying a vintage Omega 166.0170 from one of the members. Interested in vintage watches mainly and prefer mechanical to quartz movements. Lots to learn on the forum and looks like a great place to be notwithstanding the usual personalities, and egos seen everywhere on the internet. Hello everyone.

The first posts that bother me are the ones where the OP asks for help, we provide it, they don't agree with our assessment or advice, get pissed, and then become abusive. Here, for example, is a thread from a new member that started out relatively innocuously and then went quickly downhill when the OP didn't like what very experienced members like Davidt and Dan S, and others, had to say:

Oh My God let's create a special safe room for all established members to recover from such trauma.

That hurts. And to think I actually enjoy all 765 posted pictures a week of your Ranchero.

Not true. I was out of the country last week and didn't post any. And it was no more than 700 the prior week. I wish that you would endeavor to get your facts straight. Jealous . . . :D

Me? Jealous? Just because I have 25 printed out pictures of your Ranchero on my bedroom walls doesn't mean I want one!

As long as you keep it at that level and don't lure me into your panel van by asking me to help you move a couch as a ruse to get the watch, I'm good with it. :D
