This was my very first Bulova Accutron Astronaut purchase about 12 years ago or so. At the time of purchase, I didn't know who the seller was but after we completed the purchase we began to chat and exchanged several emails. Turns out he was a Vietnam Helicopter Pilot who bought this watch about 1967+-. Later he switched to the US Air Force and became a pilot (We both served in the US Air Force at about the same time). As you can see from the attached pics, he became a very accomplished pilot flying U2 Spy Planes for about 12+- years. After he retired from that he became a commercial airline pilot and flew till about 2006. Both he and I worked for the same airline. He has also written a book about his experience flying the U2 Dragon Lady. This is one of my favorite watches as it has a documented back story that is quite unique.

Some old pics I took while stationed at Nellis AFB Las Vegas Nv. back in the early 80s. That is Sunrise Mountian in the background. I was stationed there for 3 years. A busy AFB and very hot also.

Arkansas ANG F-4s During Red Flag about 1983. Note the Razorback near the engine air inlet.

F-4 from Spangdahlem Air Base West Germany During Red Flag Circa 1983

A row of A-10s from (EL) which would be the now-closed England AFB. Circa 1983

Frankly, I was shocked when CAPT Finley said that the reason why he was auctioning off his GMT Master and flight jacket was because none of his sons were interested in them. WTF?! Don't they know how lucky they are to be able to inherit heirlooms with that kind of provenance? That GMT is a beauty. It's what stainless steel Rolex was once all about. Good honest tool watches that were used as intended. Not the blingy over hyped luxury items they are today.

@Timecollector
Love the pics. Great story behind that Bulova Accutron too. Were you a USAF pilot back in the day?
Nope, just a regular aircraft mechanic, getting my A&P License after my military tour and working for Eastern Airlines (A short stint with Eastern with too many labor issues (Frank Borman and Frank Lorenzo) and lost my job when we went on strike in the Spring of 1989) and then working for and retiring from American Airlines. 38 years total for my entire aviation career.

When is that MAD DOG going to become El Jefe?
That’s the only way you going to work with him.
Maybe in 2024…still don’t have good seniority in the left seat of the 737 in DTW.

I was sort of shocked as well. That’s some pretty cool stuff that Dad has! I know that our kids have expressed interest in my issued G-1 as well as my two vintage Speedmasters [105.003-64 and 145.022-71 indicated via red arrows in the pic below]…but who knows…maybe they’re just FOS. Pic below from a recent AOCS reunion where I was able to visit my old bird, the SH-60B Seahawk…

Listen,
If H and M change their minds about the Speeds, you can trust that they would be well taken care of with me.
Just say’n.

55 years ago... talking about aviators
All Navy personal receive a white uniform (when operational in tropical area), especially the white shoes are hard to maintain 😗
USS Ticonderoga with a Vought F-8 Crusader jet on deck, a jet type which was 60 years in service (counting the 1987 Photo Recce reserve).

It's us A&P's that keep the boys at the pointy end comfortable and confident 😀

50 years ago... 15 November 1973, first powered flight of the X-24B lifting body in a joined USAF/NASA effort, a PILOT program that lasted 15 years (summer 1962 tot November 1975). An interesting flight research program, initiated by engineer Robert Dale Reed, with great test pilots among whom Bruce Peterson, Cecil Powell, John Manke and Milton Thompson.
Wrist watch wise an interesting history (Speedmaster & Rolex GMT-master) and by some aviation fans known for the Six Million Dolllar Man intro:

The TV series intro used actual footage of the May 10, 1967 M2-F2 lifting body vehicle crash piloted by NASA test pilot Bruce Peterson, severely injured , Peterson survived the crash and went on to fly for Northrop.
Note at 0:48 that's a Northrop HL-10 hanging underneath the B-52 while the crash footage is a Northrop M2-F2, which was rebuilt as M2-F3.
