Terminology question: what's a bumper?

Another one for the "OF dictionary of horological descriptions".
Seriously, what does it mean?
I have now seen the word used to describe what seemed like quite different types of lugs / watches.
Is there / should there be a sticky thread for terminology questions?

Thanks and best regards,
S

Expanding beyond the excellent horological definitions shows above....

Merriam-Webster defines a bumper as "one that bumps".👍

That's not me in the first photo.. but it could have been. 😗

My favorite explanation !
I'll have a more difficult time with the technical stuff, for sure. 😟

I watch? Sacrilege.... My use of "calatrava" seemed very mild in comparison.

Unfortunately, this type of movement fell out of favour due to the excessive movement required to keep them properly wound. See

I think its existence was to circumvent a patent for an automatic that full rotor rotation (GP Gyromatic?). I just acquired a 354 Seamaster (last week!), my first bumper, it is quite endearing to have that little occasional nudge on your wrist from your pet watch.

Common mistake, actually it is all in the footwork:

When Omega dropped bumpers they really disappeared from the line. Was there any assembly from parts clean-up much later than 1955? Does anyone here have a really late Omega bumper?

No matter. I still like bumpers.

Did the bumper design soldier on in other brands? How long?

I'm glad you asked this question, as I had the same question.

Thanks to all for answering about the bumper rotor movement, and the various other 'bumpers'.

This would all fit very well into a special thread called "terminology unhinged".

Just ask each question as it arises and we'll answer. 😉 Virtually nobody reads stickies. 🙁

Maybe you don't realize people do because the only thing you ever hear about is when people don't, ie they ask questions that have already been answered...
You only hear about planes when they crash, never when they land on time.
