Terminology question: what's a bumper?

Seriously, what does it mean?
I have now seen the word used to describe what seemed like quite different types of lugs / watches.
Is there / should there be a sticky thread for terminology questions?

Here you can see the springs that the rotor contacts. The rotor is removed here and the springs are between the right hand lugs which would be the lower pair of lugs above.

Le terme vient de " bumper automatic ", automatique á butée ou marteau. Par opposition à l'automatique á rotor qui fait un tour entier.
