Tennis Anyone?

I still don't understand what happened. DM dominated 2 sets. Then JS dominated 3 sets. What changed? No idea! Pleased for the lad. We'll be seeing this match-up a lot more.

Sinner started hitting the ball harder from set 3 on, and DM let off on the pace at around the same time.

I can;t help but think that the sheer amount of tennis that DM had played before his match (6 hours more than Sinner since ethe start of the event) had something to do with it. He looked pretty gassed by the end. I think DM set a record for that event in playing the most sets including the final - 31 sets!

Yes DM just ran out of gas…you could see it in his face in some of the close ups in the 3rd set. Was good I got to watch the whole game at work in between jobs Sunday night 👍

As Al said, over 24 hours of tennis in his run up to the final.

Also it’s been a hot summer in Melbourne (whole east coast) this year, I know one day it was high 30s he played a 5 set match in.

Time to start tuning up for (watching) Wimbledon with a gratuitous photo...

PS @sonicosa I hope the tennis development has been coming on, not too compromised by having a small child. (Soon they can pick up the balls for you, so it's all good.)

I was watching a first round match on Monday, and spotted someone I know on the court!

That's my friend Irene who is an umpire and judge. The last time I spotted her on a televised match was at the Canadian Open (Masters 1000 level event) a few years ago so it's pretty cool she's now doing the slams as a line judge! She just played a match against my wife a few weeks ago...

Irene sure has cool glasses! (As well as the spiffy Ralph Lauren outfit.)
Shame about Felix A-A going down in five today (Kokkinakkis). Looking at the stats, it's quite hard to believe he didn't win 😕

I never understood why the line judges wear white trousers..

It's one of the few things at Wimbledon that distracts from the spectacle, you would think they'd wear something that blends into the background or is more muted.

Wimbledon has a very distinctive aesthetic which always brings to mind the incredibly unnerving but equally stunning 'Olympia' by Leni Riefenstahl.
It's kind of timeless, other than very subtle sponsorship logos everyone playing wears white, and there's no advertising and garish colours to distract from the all-important spectacle, again other than the very subtle sponsorship, Rolex and IBM of course, Emirates (previously oppo) Barclays (previously Robinson's barley water) and even if you're watching it on TV (UK) there's never any advertising or any commercial breaks, it virtually takes over the two main BBC channels, and they do a great job with covering virtually every other match via the red button.

I really love the fact that it looks virtually identical to how it did when I was a kid, watching the likes of Connors, Billie Jean, McEnroe, Borg, Evert, Martina et al.

Obviously, the technology, courts etc. are constantly evolving, the colour of the ball changed from white to yellow, but everything else pretty much looks the same as it ever did. I hope it always looks this way; it's unique and all the better for it.

Unfortunately here we get commercials at every change over. 🤬

There are some things that have changed - colours on the players clothes came and went, but I like the all whites.

What I dislike is that some of the formality is gone - was just remarking to my wife today that I sort of miss the traditions of calling the players by "Mister", "Miss", or "Mrs".

I also hate on court interviews at all events. They already do press, so I fail to see the need for this, and it completely screwed up the tradition of having the players exit the courts together - I always thought that showed respect to the player who lost on the day, but now they have to slink off alone after their loss.

Oh no! I'd hate to have TV commercials after every changeover, that would drive me bloody mad! ruins the whole sense of being completely immersed for hours on end and the sense of occasion.
I watched the Austrian Grand Prix at a friend's house at the weekend and their live feed was TSN 5 (North America), I actually couldn't believe when they cut away IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE for commercials😲 I thought SKY was bad but at least they don't cut away during the race, I just don't get it??
If it's of interest to you there's probably a way of getting the BBC UK feed (might be 1080 rather than 4K or UHD) at least for the two main channels, you can watch for hours on end without any commercials ever, and if you've got surround system and a nice big screen you get a real sense of occasion and immersion, especially when there are no interruptions.

Completely agree, unlike the press conference that used to follow sometime after, the players don't have a chance to compose themselves, it's very unfair, especially if they're emotional.

And Mr, Mrs, Miss Ms was very respectful and charming

How true. I think the following formula has been agreed between ATP, WTA, and the networks, to ensure smooth running of the commercial breaks at all tournos:
"I feel great.
I can't really find words.
Tough opponent, I really respect them.
I couldn't have done it without this amazing crowd.
I love you guys.
This is the tournament I love most. Even as a little kid.
Next round? Just going to give it my very best shot.
Thanks, bye."

When someone like Murray starts giving properly considered, thoughtful responses to their questions, the interviewers and directors find it very stressful!
it completely screwed up the tradition of having the players exit the courts together - I always thought that showed respect to the player who lost on the day, but now they have to slink off alone after their loss.
In fairness, what looks to the spectators like an expression of dignified sportsmanlike conduct used to be very distressing for some of the less experienced losers - sometimes slinking off is not such a bad option... 🤔

Got to give huge credit to Ms Sun though - so many net approaches, so many winners! Also a shoo-in for the Kleenex sponsorship 😉
And now lovely Coco has gone! This popularity contest is starting to turn into some kind of sports tournament - giving tennis a bad name... 😜

Very happy to see Krejcikova come through today. She thoroughly outplayed Collins with a great serve and wicked slices that stayed low and gave Collins fits. Very smart tennis on her part. Don’t think the injury to Collins made any difference in the outcome on that one.

de Minaur looks to have injured himself making that great volley on the last point of his match. Then he had to sit there waiting for his on court interview, where they of course asked him about it. Yet another example of why I hate those. I’m sure all he wanted to do was get off the court and get that evaluated. Fortunately he said in his actual press conference that it wasn’t serious...hope that’s the case so he can be in top form in the next match.

I do really like Medvedev, he played great against Sinner who was a bit under the weather for a while, but he fought his way right back into the match, it was a great win for Daniil, it beggars belief that he's only won a single Grand Slam; I'd love to see him go on and win this!

No Djokovic v De Minaur semifinal today👎

Very disappointing - looks like the injury on the last volley of the previous match was much worse than he let on in the interviews. Hope he recovers quickly. ND already had an easy draw, that just got easier. 🤦

Unfortunately for majors, the coverage here in Canada on TSN is the feed from ESPN. For other events it tends to be mostly Tennis Channel, and there the commentators tend to be a little more respectful of the play - in other words they are not yammering on through rallies and repeating dumb stuff throughout the whole match. I find it's not a coincidence that those TC commentators are in large part British. In fact I was listening to the Match Point Canada podcast the other day, and they had Nick Lester on - he made a point of saying that as a commentator he gave the match some space, so that people could just enjoy the play and not hear him all the time - the US commentators could learn from that. I find the better commentators not only say less, but if the point starts while they are in mid sentence, they just stop talking - the US channels just keep on talking - it's like they have been told that there shouldn't be any "dead air" or something.

Sometimes if a match I want to watch is on an outside court, there is no commentator. TSN calls this "the stadium experience" and honestly it's very refreshing just to watch a match with no one commentating.

But now in the quarters the ESPN coverage has reached a whole new level of stupidity. I am always recording all the channels so I can see matches that I want to see. Sometimes more then one match I want to watch is on at the same time. During coverage of the match I'm watching, I try to avoid news of the other match, and when they give little updates at the bottom of the screen or in one corner, I can avoid those for the few seconds they are displayed. Now ESPN has decided to spoil the other match by displaying the score for that match 100% of the time...

So as I'm watching the Ostapenko/Krejcikova match, they have the other quarter's score being displayed point by point, in the upper right corner of the screen. This never goes away - it's impossible to avoid seeing it. Who the feck decided that this was a good idea? The sheer stupidity of this...it's it beyond belief...🤬🤬🤬

Payback for Oz Open this year - bit of a mirror image. I know it's a little immature of me, but I am finding it increasingly hard to see the Russian competitors as just sports people though, let alone rooting for them. Wrong on so many levels, I know, I know...
Anyway, can anyone bet against young Carlito this year? I have never, ever, seen such a marriage of power and touch; he is starting to answer the question, how can RF be replaced in the pantheon. Something different but special, to be sure.
