Swotting Up On Rolexes...

I was at the Uxbridge watch fair.today and the only thing that caught my eye was a Rolex explorer ii. It was in 'like nos' condition, and the chap selling told me it was £2800 (which struck my uninformed self as reasonable given the condition) and then asked me if i knew what it was. He reeled off a 5 digit (i think) number starting with 16 (i think). Is there something like desmonds blog i can use for rolexes, to understand what he was likely trying to tell me, what reasonable values are and what dial variations look like? Its a scary non omega world out there....

Respectable Member Mothra

Trying to get an authentic and untouched vintage Omega is bad enough, and as for Rolex, it is even worse.

Thank-you.

Probably a 16570. VRF has a decent Rolex archive.

After I read Kyle links on controversial ROC Paul Newman daytona....... I can relate with what you mean of 'bad' fanboys.
Probably they have invested so much in their watches, it change their logical perspective? But if that's the case Patek's fanboys should be the worse.

It has nothing to do with the price - it's about the attitude and ego of owning a Rolex that some people have. Haven't seen it among anyone here.

I see.......from the first time I am attracted to Omega, I feel it is a more understated brand compare to Rolex. Probably the brand image of certain watch attract different group of people, too.

I wish I could find one of the threads were the faithful & loyal were waxing poetic about how great it was to own Rolex. It would turn your stomach.

Thank all for the help - Kyle, that looks like a good starting point. I promise not to let any potential future rolex ownership go to my head... 😗 In my head, I think Omega, on average, is probably stronger as a brand from a horology point of view and I think it's where I'll always 'live'. Having said that, there are some nice watches out there that aren't Omega - GMT and Explorer work for me on Rolex - and I plan to start branching out a bit.

Good. We don't want to be smacking you around.

- GMT and Explorer work for me on Rolex -

Take a look at Adam's (adam78) vintage Explorer. 👍 And there are plenty of 1675's here. Lots of Pepsis and even a Root Beer or two (Cicindela has a sweet one). That 40 mm Oyster case used on the GMT and Sub is excellent.

and I plan to start branching out a bit.

Look to see who owns what and remember to get some help first if you need it, although you've got experience. The fun really starts when you get into multiple brands.

I want a Rootbeer........🥰. How uncommon they are? I saw two locally. One for sale.

I could be wrong (ask kyle L he is our official TRF monitor 😁 ), but my perception is these are going up in value all the time. Some sell on eBay cheap, but that's usually with multiple faults. Good ones are pricey and difficult to analyze from eBay photos.

OK thanks. I need to replenish my watch budget first 😁
