I see.......from the first time I am attracted to Omega, I feel it is a more understated brand compare to Rolex. Probably the brand image of certain watch attract different group of people, too.

Please tell me about me... Brand image/certain watch/group of people - tell me who I am.
I always thought watch collecting was about the watches. Maybe I am naive.
12 Omega
12 Rolex
6 Zenith
3 Lemania
1 Tissot
2 Longines
1 Heuer
5 Seiko
4 Universal
1 Atlantic
1 Citizen
1 Nivada
+ some
Putting people in categories depending on brand interest is - I would like to say - walking on very thin ice.
When you talk about "Rolex-people" do you mean.

See my point?

Why put peope in small sqare boxes? Life is bigger than that.
Kind regards
JE
PS by the way - they are all my watches and therefore I must be a really round guy someone is trying to pry down into a sqare box. Live and let live.

See my point?

Yes - that you, as with everyone here that I know, are a well rounded intelligent collector who doesn't swear blind allegiance to a brand for it's reputation and prestige.

Why put peope in small sqare boxes?

Because some (underlined and in bold for extreme emphasis) people do live in small square boxes. That's why words like "fanboy" exist. You can't deny they're out there.

By the way - I also have a root beer Rolex - will that make me a fanboy?

Not unless you start waxing poetic about the virtues of Rolex and how wonderful it is to own watches from a brand that the sun rises and sets on. 😜

(which I've seen - wish I could find the threads because they're f-ing nauseating)

BTW...... awesome watch!

A root beer Rolex is always attractive. Its seldom seen killer sunburst-effect dial, matching the color of the bezel, is indeed very alluring. This makes the whole watch look alive.

Thank-you.

Today my brother-in-law contacted me and said, he is looking into buying a Rolex. I asked him, whether that watch is to be worn daily or be kept as a potential investment. He came back and said this,

What I am looking for is a watch to wear everyday…what do u think of the watch below and the price…

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE / GMT-MASTER II/ 16713 / CERT

SGD$8,380

  • Model: 16713 Black Dial
  • 1 Unit in Stock

MODEL : 16713 S/NO : "Y205xxx SERIES" Complete box & cert dated 2003 Local AD
Chronometer in stainless steel case 40mm fitted with a Rolex 18K yellow gold and steel bracelet. Graduated rotatable bezel, 24-hour hand and independently adjustable 12-hour hand allow simultaneous use of any two time-zones. Case with shoulders protects the winding-crown. Waterproof to 100 m / 330 feet. Auto movement 3185, sapphire crystal, 98% mint condition....... (Discontinued model, highly collectible.)

Cheers,

I informed him, while there are some vintage Rolex watches that are uncommon and highly collectible but definitely, not the model reference 16713. Furthermore, the asking price is outrageous.

Thank-you.

The price is probably only 5% above market price in Jakarta. Certainly not outrageous. Modern used Rolex price is traded at very thin range. It is like a commodity. When you bought a used Rolex in Jakarta the store will give you buy back guarantee ANYTIME (with similar condition) only at 10% discount for older than 2005 and 5% for newer than 2005. For other brand the buyback guarantee is at 20% discount.
That's why they are very very popular. Very low risk investment with bragging and showing rights.

Sorry, more than likely I am out of touch with the price of used modern Rolex, since the only new Rolex watch that I may want to get, when I can afford it, is the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea.

My in-law has come back to me. He has decided on a Rolex Submariner 116610LV, the green Rolex Submariner LV. He is buying it brand new for Singapore Dollars $11 000.00. I do not know whether or not, this is a wise decision. For that money, I would rather get a good vintage Rolex Sea-Dweller model reference 1665.

Thank-you.

Went to the boat club for some evening work on the boat. Had a bit of a problem that I want to vent with you guys. As I know Omegas to be wimpy, I strapped on a sturdy Rolex on top of the Connie. To shield it from harm. Worked fine but the SS oyster case worked its way into the soft gold - leaving marks on the case. What am I to do?
