Sub or GMT Master?

I have the newest no-date sub - it’s the only dive watch I own. Separately, I have an affinity for GMT/24-hr complications, and own (too) many but don’t own a Rolex GMT.

I wear the hell out of the no-date, as my “beater.”** With a single caveat, I love the watch: its simplicity, its legibility, it’s zero-concerns for water, and - surprisingly - I’ve found the bezel timer to be 90%+ of the timing functions I need (timing pasta, workouts, toddler time-outs).

The single caveat others have mentioned is the ubiquity of the sub in modern “watch guy” banker culture. However, that is a criticism I think leveled equally at both the sub and GMT.

You won’t go wrong with either, but the no-date Sub gets my vote. I do second the notion of purchasing the GMT, living with them both for a short spell, and then deciding if only one is to be kept.

** I recognize the awkward insinuation of having a modern Sub as a “beater,” but when offered the watch I purchased it on the philosophy that I would wear it as Subs were meant to be worn, and for tasks/days to which I don’t subject my other watches.

a long time ago, i had made a deal to trade in my full set 14060M, speedy reduced and $500 for a gmt master 2 16710. in retrospect, i shouldve just paid as Ill never be able to get that 14060M kit again at a reasonable price. If i could go back and give myself a piece of advice, id tell my younger self to just cough up the $5000 portion of that trade. I dont care for any of the six digit offerings as they are too bulky.

Predictably, there is no consensus, just personal taste.

I've had several 5 & 6 digit subs & GMTs , my current personal taste , 16700 bought new in 99 & 16610LV for my 50th . I just couldn't get on with the 6 digits & traded them on but kept the 5 digits , to me they just feel better on the wrist. And I know the improvements on the 6 digit with the ceramic bezel & glidelock are great , but prefer the overall charm of the older models. Just go with your own instincts & you’ll know which to choose .

I own both watches but if I had to choose only one I would definitely go for the Sub.The versatility of that watch along with the symmetry and the simplicity of the dial makes it amazing in my eyes.

Agree… and come to think of it, if there would be a way to change the hour hand in one-hour increments, like the aqua terra, then the Submariner would be pretty much perfect as it could also be rapidly adjusted when traveling across time zones.
Wonder if this would be a major movement/caliber change or not.

First of all, I would go for a 5 digit Rolex.
I do own a 16610 (Sub) and a 16710 (GMT) and I appreciate both of them. But the look (besides the GMT-function) is an extra for me.
What about a 16600 (Sea-Dweller)? A Sea -Dweller is not that common as a Sub. Unfortunately I sold mine a few years ago.

This is my GMT, I am wearing today...

As others have said, you can’t really go wrong with either. Both watches have their own pros and cons.

Many “one-watch” folks have been perfectly happy with their 4 digit GMTs or Sub that they have worn for 40+ years. I’d imagine it would be the same if someone goes with a modern GMT or Sub reference.

Personally, I would lean Sub over GMT I find the timing bezel more useful than multiple timezones.

Sharing more love for the GMT. I'm a black and grey kind of guy, so... a splash on the wrist now and then works for me. You do you.

do it.

Every person on the planet has a sub (or six). If I see one more sub, I’ll start wearing Apple Watch just to stand out.

The number in the date window says a lot about this person.🤬
