Stupid question about speedmaster cases and caseback fit

Thanks for the suggestion! I guess I need to fill out the Parts & Repair form on the site and give it a go?

I'm still not good telling if re/lume jobs are good or not, but it doesn't look like the relume went out the plots so I thought it was pretty good, too. I'm not sure what top-quality relume would look like, though.

I put the hands up against the pictures in the '2998 alpha hand length' post of sp101 (the Holy bible...or is that MWO? In spacefruit we trust!) and I think that the hands are OK. I'm happy I got the stick hands too, though. Sadly I can't try placing them on the dial because none of the parts are with me right now. I can though supply a picture that proves the OEM sapphire caseback fits straight lug cases:

Just a meager effort to contribute back to this great community.

That relume looks great! as @oddboy said... I would defintiely rather a great relume than terrible original lume. I think that it looks great. Used tritium too... Although I don't remember when they switched from radium to tritium. Somewhere around that time, right?

You seem like you're well on your way. Not knowing much more about your case back question, I wish you best the best of luck.

Yes, I've been reading the radium level research on early 2998s thread and I think for the 2998-5 it should have tritium. Thank you for the support!

The original case for the sapphire case back uses a different movement spacer than the standard one so I'm not sure how well the sapphire case back will fit with the 321 movement as the movement spacers are different between 861 (1861) and 321.
Thomas Preik makes sapphire case backs which fit the 321 movement and I've fitted a few of his to my Speedmasters. It obviously doesnt have quite the look of the Omega Sapphire case back but it looks good and shows off the movement nicely.
His method of fitment is simply a thick metal ring which fits between the movement and case back and holds the whole movement in place.

Yes you're right- as far as I know, the spacer used in the 1863 version doesn't work with 321, though I've found at least one source that says the 863 spacer works, which I can't get anyway so it doesn't really matter...

People have made the OEM display back fit before Preik arrived by a similar method to Priek, which is to add a ring that fills in the space between the movement and the back. Some people like Maddox have done it with an O-ring, while I've also seen others make precise-fit spacers for this purpose. I plan to do the latter and this should keep me busy while I wait for a 1450012 caseback to pop up for sale. The Preik spacer apparently also doesn't fit with the OEM one, so I'll need to find some machining person to make the ring for me.

Thank you for the kind responses! I'm just being very careful since I know my question might be considered a "nuisance question" by some of our very experienced members here.

So @padders would a service 145.0012 caseback fit the straight-lug cases with no rattling issue whatsoever?

It's a perfectly reasonable questions. I hope you aren't hesitate to post in the future because you are concerned about negative responses. That is bad for the community.

I’m pretty sure that tritium wouldn’t have been used until 1963. That’s when you’ll notice dials being signed “t Swiss Made t”.

Omega started using tritium before the dials were marked with T's. As I understand it, roughly around the 2998-6, so very early 60s and before '63.

Yep, I also read somewhere on OF that Omega started using tritium before the swiss regulations for indicating "T" kicked in. Apparently the switch happened around 2998-4~5.

Thanks to the kindness of the community I think I'm feeling better welcomed here. There are so many knowledgeable and kind people here and I think it's thanks to these people newbies like me can start to feel warmed up and post things. But I'm also very careful by nature on the internet, it's very easy to misread tone and intention through text so I try my best to pick my words carefully.
