@britrover you could always try to buy a generic 20mm mesh from eBay to try out the look. IMO, the "Bond" Seamasters rarely look good on anything but bracelets, leather straps are nearly always a letdown. The 20mm OEM rubber strap is pretty good, though.

Yup, rubber straps look good on SMPs. Attached is an image of my 2561.80 on genuine omega rubber 98000439. Picture from a project I did, wasn't meant to show the watch/strap. It's a perfect match to the dial and bezel. Sadly, I don't think they make a genuine version of this in 20mm with a curved end... so you'd have to get a generic off ebay (quality is actually very good).

I've pretty much abandoned the bracelet for the OEM NATO these days. Very comfortable and light.
