Speedy Pro question: difference between 145.022 and 145.0022?

Hello, is there a difference between the 145.022 and the 145.0022 -- apart from the extra "0"?

And what year did the change from six to seven digits come in?

Reason for asking: I have Speedmaster Professional. The movement s/n is 44xxxxxx which I believe dates it to circa 1983. I think it's a ST145.022

When I bought the watch the seller was very honest about its issues and said it had come to him without a caseback. He added one to the watch but I'm aware it's not original. Likewise the dust cover.

Inside the caseback it says "145.0022" and underneath that "345.002"

Should it have a 145.022 back?

Finally is a 44xxxxxx watch too late to be a 145.022-78 ? (Speedmaster101.com says the range for the -78 is 44xx xxxx – 45xx xxxx but I think I've seen other sources that says 44 million is too late for that -- of course both might be right and it could on the cusp, with some being -78 and others not)

Thanks!

That is a service caseback, for both the 145.022 and later 345.022 (hence both numbers on it). Seller said he replaced the caseback, so this shouldn’t be a surprise it isn’t original.

Thanks. Are the 145.022, 145.0022 and 345.022 all the same watch?

Yes but there are minor production changes that did not correlate to the numbering changes.

the watch serial number resolved to 1983, which in my mind is to early for the 345 stamping on the inner caseback. 145.0022 was the case part number at that point. It was not in 1984.

So at best you have a newer caseback on your watch. What does the rest look like?

Good to know that the back is a recognised service replacement. Makes sense that it has both sets of numbers on it, for interoperability.

Not sure what you mean by this? Or rather: not sure what I should be looking for.

Could a 44 million s/n (~1983) originally have been 145.022-78, as Speedmaster101 suggests?

And what year did the change from six to seven digits come in, i.e. from 145.022 to 145.002?

THANKS

Depends on what you refer to, the reference of the watch or the case reference (I know, totally confusing why they started differentiating between the watch and the case reference. It was so much easier before)

Ah, there's an issue there! The dial it came with had no feet and was glued to the baseplate. I've got it safe but the one it has on now is a step dial from 1970 (with long "S" and "r").

It had no dial feet? ::facepalm1:: I mean how? I can’t imagine a scenario in which an obvious 861 dial has its feet removed and put onto an 861…

good news is your step dial is worth more then the rest of the parts. The DNN doesn’t hurt.

Yes the 145.022 to 145.0022 is confusing

My 1991 Speedy on caseback states 145.022
Add for watch was 145.022 and model number noted as 145.0022

I think what I'd like to do is get the original dial repaired and source a -78 caseback

I note that the s/n of this one is only ~500 from mine and is a -78

I’d get an extract of the archive first…

make sure what you want to do which isn’t cheap makes sense for what Omega says it is.

otherwise enjoy your hot rod. Nice early dial and bezel with a new caseback and newer movement.
