I understand your point but I disagree. It’s not an individual informing the worth of an item, it’s the market. An individual can say he/she isn’t paying a certain price as they expect the market to continue to slide but if the market disagrees, that individual won’t be buying a watch.
At the minute it’s the market saying that prices aren’t what they were 18-24 months ago and (understandably) some sellers who bought at the peak and are now selling are reluctant to price in line with the market.

Ah gotcha, yeah I see your point. It makes sense.

In my experience collecting vintage things (antique wood duck hunting decoys for 30 years) and now watches I periodically sell things I think I can live without at auction, and accept the market prices rather than setting buy it now price based on my view of market.
If I “lose” money so be it, I had the years of enjoyment of the ducks on my shelf. But once I decide to sell its gone in auction and I move on, presumably buying the next one at lower price if market is down.
I’ve found that thinking of the items as investments detracts from the enjoyment of the hobby.
However TBH it’s taken years to get to this state of mind.

One quirk of the current data is that the transitional 145.022-68 is priced slightly higher than the 321 movement 145.012-67 and -68 models in all grades below VG. The sales data may reflect this but personally I put at $1-2K premium on a 321 over a 861 all other things being equal. I've never really understood the considerable appeal that the transitional has, to me it is a decontented 145.012-67/8.
Totally agree. Personally I think 321 should be more valuable than 861 as well, but to each his own.

The transitional has the same externals than the old one so the same look, and much less troubles with the movement down the line if you wand to actually wear it (parts availability). I would value the transitional higher too...

Agree 100%

This is a great point. I've never thought about it like this.

You are both, as always, the voices of reason. Shame that watch collecting often has nothing to do with reason 😀. Archer, also you have a hospital perspective - I'm assuming that you spend a lot of time seeing the ones that go wrong. I prefer 321s because they are 321s and am ready to completely ignore the very reasonable point of view that I shouldn't. I'm like a lottery winner, I remember all the ones that are great and forget the huge bills that add up for the ones that weren't.
