just back from Tanner M: excellent work overall: got it on the wrist and enjoying the piece.

Beautiful! Tanner is a master in refreshing this style case.

I have noted that Mark2 crystal are not all the same.
If you look on the word Tachymetre in some glass it is not placed centric between outer and inner ring of the black bezelring. That is a sign that this glass can be the original glass. Replaced glasses have the Tachymetre exact in the middle of the black bezel ring. (courtesy of siguzi).
Moreover we can note the serif of "one", that sometime could be "1" or "I", and position of DOTS (over or next to seventy and/or ninety).

What do you this about it? And which are the original MK2 crystals, not service or aftermarket?

Interesting @milhouse, do you have any photos by way of comparison?

Hi Nathan.
You can see different crystal fonts in this thread too, at pages 1 and 2

Thanks for that I can see the differences in the pictures you mention.

I have two different examples - Font very different and different position of dots near 90 and 70, both without serifs.

Poor photo!

I’m fairly certain neither are originals and may indeed not be Omega service replacements.

Best regards

Nathan

Cool topic! MK II racing was my first serious watch.
Now that’s “totally tropical” very cool indeed

I noticed this thread earlier in the week but I haven't been at home in order to add to the conversation.

Below are two photos, the first was replaced at service last year and I believe is original to the 1972 watch; second photo is of the watch with a new glass installed by STS and is the current available replacement. Watch is an .034 not an .014 if that makes a difference (and it will).

Thanks! These look similar to my before and after service. So from your evidence I think my pre service is an original, post service is Omega service replacement.

Much appreciated.

It's just plated shark mesh from eBay, nothing fancy but looks good on Cushion case.

I blame it on the autoconnect.
Who did the plating? It's a very cool look.

I had a lovely original Mk2 for a while but sold it around four years ago for £750. It needed a service but other than that was lovely and unpolished. What an idiot.

These days I have just one but wear it (as I am today) on an 1171. I'm not a fan of bracelets that flare out (apart from on something like the Marine Chronometer, where it looks right) and a proportionately out compared to the watch case. I struggle with 22mm lugs on anything below about 43mm or 44mm. I could never wear either Mk2 on the correct bracelet but the 1171 transforms it for me.

Here's the old one. I can't remember where it went but I hope (unrealistically!) it didn't get the full refinishing treatment when it was serviced. I appreciate the racing dial one has been lapped but only because someone had polished it by hand. For me it's either original or lapped, there's nothing inbetween!

I think my MKII racing is probably my favourite daily watch currently . I know it's had a service dial fitted & probably the hands too , the case has had a polish & not even sure of the movement serial number .So it won't be winning any prizes for originality, But for the money paid, to me it's a beauty . And the 1159 bracelet is so comfortable it's a joy to wear .

A good day to remind of this funky, chunky and strangely underrepresented Speedmaster iteration. 😀 46 years today!

I really like MKiis, have owned a few now including a Telestop. Finding a good unmolested case is the hard part and why I am keeping this one.

Is it a Telestop though?. That would put cat among them pigeons.
