It would have to be truly hideous for me not to try and buy one; 50th anniv Apollo XI is just going to be a must have for any Speedy/Space nerd. Take my money Omega.

They reproduced the 2915 pretty accurately with the 60th anniversary. The most obvious release would be a reproduction of the watches they took to the moon in 1969.

I'd like to see DON bezel, applied logo, 1039 bracelet and a Velcro strap. Not sure if it should have fauxtina, it wouldn't have had it in 1969 but it looks great on the 60th so I hope it does.

If they read the feedback on the 60th then they'll know that we didn't like the big clasp. I don't need another shoe sized box either!

If they did release a DON, would that be a first since the originals?
Wonder what would do to the market - would Omega 'care'? Would you want the vintage DON to be distinguishable from any new release?

It would be great if Omega went back to the small sized boxes!!

DON bezel would be possible, especially if it came with another text style font to distinguish it from the 1960s versions 👍

Shhhhh!....don't you know that Omega actually read this forum? Some genius in the Omega design / marketing department might think they can indeed get away with something even more "colorful" than this year's Apollo 8 DSOTM😀

Seriously though, I saw a Wei Koh Basel 2018 interview with the Omega CEO where Raynald mentions that they have many ideas for the 2019 Apollo 11, but he wants to make sure that they respect and honour the Speedmaster (fingers crossed).

The interview is pretty boring in several parts with Wei Koh (as usual) talking too much about himself, the Apollo 11 / 2019 discussion is right at the end...you can jump to 11:05

I do hope they follow the "classical" design cues you suggested @djmusicman. I even agree with your fauxtina suggestion to add some warmth to the dial. Pretty sure they will do a very nice rendition on the case back of the mission patch. Perhaps an enamel dial similar to the Snoopy? I know they ran into some production issues with the enamel dial, but it did look pretty cool.

If they don't go for the "classical" design option I might like to see another meteorite dial variant, but not panda or reverse panda, just a very nicely done execution of a meteorite dial. Would not be surprised to see them go Platinum for a precious metal LE.

11:08 ... there're too many ideas
So probably a classic black dial Speedmaster in steel case... and a Gold version ?
.
Edit: oh yes and smaller boxes, like the iconic cubic crater box 👍

I hope they price it higher enough to include a model moon rover as part of the package. Will be a dream come true. 😀

Moonrock dial.

Memo to Elon Musk: your mission is to safely land an unmanned Spacex on the surface of the moon, collect NN kg of moonrock, safely return it to Earth and deliver it to Bienne in time for fabrication into dials for 50th anniv Apollo XI LE.

Price of Apollo XI 50th will be inversely proportional to Kgs of moonrock returned.

Upon further reflection, for me to pull the trigger the new 50th LE will have to have more appeal than the two LEs I own (below). I see no reason to purchase just based on the historical significance of the anniversary.

I will be rooting for a classical faithful reissue similar to Omega's approach with the 60th LE, with a subtle tropical dial and discreet fauxtina + multiple strap options. A very nice engraved mission patch caseback would be my preference, but I would not complain if they opt for some special new elegant finishing on the 1861 movement with an exhibition case back. Perhaps a domed sapphire crystal replicating the hesalite? For the Railmaster 60th LE they managed to do a lovely domed sapphire crystal...for a 42mm Speedy Pro this sort of crystal would be expensive, but I do think it would bring the best of both worlds: the lovely hesalite type distortion and a scratch free surface😀

Has to be hesalite to me, you don't get the same warmth with sapphire. I can't imagine they'll do a 321 movement and a 1861 would be fine for me. A watch with the look of a 145.022-68 would be my dream 50th.The one in the video is stunning.

The lunar rover wasn't part of the Apollo XI mission, they were only used by NASA in later missions. You're onto something though, a model Lunar Module would be appropriate and a really cool memento.

In summary: Manual wind, steel case, hesalite, classic black dial possibly with a new look DON bezel
😎
Talking about a real memento... About 50 years ago, Omega wasn't only selling time pieces but Omega was selling passion...
Take a look at this heavy cardboard concentric mission analyzer for the Apollo 8 mission, the first mission to orbit the Moon, by Omega SA
You can move the cardboard wheels to cross reference mission events (Launch, LOI, re-entry,... ) with mission elapsed time, a wonderful item IMHO !

Although I think you are spot on trying to get as close to an authentic Apollo 11 moonwatch as possible, I fear your suggested LE might be seen as being too "boring" by the Omega sales / marketing execs and not sufficiently different from the standard Speedy Pro for such a significant anniversary. If Omega do limit the Apollo 11 50th LE to 1969 watches, I do think there would be enough hard core Speedy collectors for a successful sale though. Well fingers crossed...it seems Raynald is fully aware of the significance of the 50th LE and even mentions that "failure is not an option"😀

@Riviera Paradise
Well, not as those vintage Speedy details would come with a (re-styled text font) DON bezel 👍
Furthermore, Omega did produce some 20 years Apollo 11 "standard" production Speedmaster chronographs with those classic features and an added display back (about 2000 watches I believe between 1989-1995)
So that would be great as I'm not in the market for a LE version in gold , nor in ceramic materials...
A quick overview of the numbers produced past "special" anniversary Apollo 11 editions:
20 years A11 = 2000 numbered + 4000 unnumbered... classic look Speedmasters
25 years A11 = 2500 numbered + 999 for Italian market ... classic look Speedmasters ( + 500 White Gold & 50 Skeleton pieces )
30 years A11 = 9999 unnumbered special logo caseback classic look Speedmasters
35 years A11 = 3500 Silvery white dial special logo caseback
40 years A11 = 8000 black dial with Apollo 11 logo & special logo caseback, among which 69 Platinum versions
45 years A11 = 1969 brushed Titanium browwnish dial Speedmasters
...
So every A11 anniversary there were large numbers produced (between 2000 and 9999 time pieces)
I guess the 50 years A11 will be a mix... betting on the numbers 69, 1969 and maybe even 5000 ?
These will be tough choices, with other rumoured anniversaries such as 50 years Alaska Project and 125 years Omega name...
2019 will be here soon... as will be 2022 ( 25 years X33 )

More generally about this future limited edition, what is your guess concerning the planning of the first presentation of the watch, i.e., when do you think Omega will show us their new baby ?

Can't wait for it 🍿

Probably, as usual during Baselworld 2019... by then the Apollo 11 anniversay will only be 4 months away...
Anyway, Omega SA did so for the Apollo 8 version for which the anniversary was still 8 months in the future (December 1968)

Don't know if Omega ever made a " Mil Spec " chronograph available to the general public, but it could be an idea to have a Speedmaster with fixed spring bars so only a velcro strap or NATO strap could be worn 👎

yes, a moon rock dial made of rocks brought from Tranquility base.

A 105.012 with a double step sapphire caseback and the hippocampus faintly etched on its surface 🙄
