Speedmaster 2998. Help needed

Hi All

found the following watch online.
Was wondering if anyone can spot something wrong with this watch. always thought about buying a vomtage 2998, but one in its original condition.

Hello,

This watch has many issues.
First, the case is polished to death (look at that caseback 🤦).
Second, the dial is from another reference (105.003) so incorrect for this 2998.
Third, the hands are not correct and relumed, as well as the dial.
Fourth, the movement is also not correct for this reference (serial is way out of the exepected one and some parts say it's a later one).

To me, it's a total no go (unless it's 100€/$/£).

If you want one in original condition this isn’t for you.

Start by checking the dial and movement

Does that movement number start 23? I think that's around 1966. This should be around 17's/18's

Hi Fred, I'm no expert on the reference, but I would study the details in the Moowatch only book if I was looking. The small details make a massive difference to the value. This forum has amazing knowledge, but if you need to check quickly the book is a great resource.

I've actually had this one in hand at the local watch fair ... I didn't bother to highlight all the issues @Seaborg mentioned to the seller (because he certainly knows)

With how things are today, you may have better luck at a well known/well renown dealer. And there will be no deals to be had unfortunately. If I recall this guy wanted round 20k+ for this ... you'll do better at a well renown dealer..

But can't you see on the tags...its from 1959...those are worth at least 60!

Well... I don't remember the seller's name, but I remember the watch. Quite a shame indeed.
You have to be very careful about all these auction site. There are a lot of reaaaaally bad watches to sell.
