Good day, I am from South Africa. My grandfaher passed away almost 20 years ago. I have inherited an Omega watch that he owned. He received it as a 30 year long service gift from Yskor (company worked for). I have no idea when the watch was manufacured.

On the watch I can see it is an Omega Electronic f300 Hz Chronometer. There is a paper with it indicating HD 178.021

The watch is gold with a stainless steel strap what looks like it is gold plated.

I cannot find the exact model online anywhere.

I need to insure the watch and need more info on it and value / replacement value.

Any assistance would be great.

Thank you Andre

Hi,

Reverse image searches are your friend. Ref 198.021.

If you could remove the case back, the reference will be there on the case back (which may not be 178.021) and the serial number of the movement will date to the year.

They'll also tell you if the watch is gold or gold-plated. If its just gold plated, there's not big value to insure (other than the sentimental value to you).

You'll need to find a watchmaker who works on the f300 movements (a tuning fork electronic movement licensed from Bulova, the Accutron technology) to get it running.

Good luck

Yep. I can confirm that is definitely a 198.021. See my avatar left for another similar hummer. They made them from the early to mid 1970s. The value isn’t huge I’m afraid, think low hundreds of USD. And even then only if running. Search on eBay for sold f300s and you’ll find others.

Getting it running well might be tricky as there are few specialists who deal with these now. There’s a guy in Thailand and also others in the US and UK I can think of but I’ve not heard of an SA expert. These were a bit of a technological dead end. A sort of precursor to the quartz watches which came along and obsoleted these by around 1976.

HD 178.021
Most likely HG, not HD, probably bad writing on the document.
HG was the Omega metal code for Yellow Gold Plate 40 micron.
