This is my grandfathers watch that has been sitting in an old jewelry chest collecting dust with a bunch of other old things. Showed it to my son who is kinda into watches and he thought it may be worth something. Some quick research says it may be worth a bit…..

Posted it on Reddit as we thought it may be fake, but now I don’t think it is.
We want to possibly sell it but have no idea of its actual worth, or where to sell. We live near Atlanta so there are some places we could go to have it appraised, but I thought I’d seek advice here…..
Anyone recommend steps forward to clean up and sell, just sell. Not really sure.

Amen to that, I hope to find something like this every time I open a drawer but a Cyma pocket watch was my best find so far in life

I think I would be more excited to find this in a cupboard than the portal to Narnia, but no luck with either so far! Guess they don’t tend to locate themselves in Billy bookcases…

I did make a video advising people about that, I share it a fair bit given how many can’t resist the urge to send rare vintage models for factory service prior to auction.

Your math is off on Example 2.

If the watch is worth $10,000 unrestored and you invest $2,000 in restoration costs, you’ve now risked $12,000.

If you sell for $3,000, you’ve lost $7,000 on the value of watch plus your $2,000 paid for service. That’s $9,000 total.

To the OP, please heed the advice of @MSNWatch and talk to a reputable auction house. Avoid anyone who appraises the watch and then wants to buy it. That’s considered unethical behavior.

You're right, I was probably rushing when I wrote that a few months ago, its always a heartbreaking outcome when people do that and send it off, spending thousands for no reason, even worse when its Rolex and they don't get the parts back
