Just got this today. A bit of a back story about my collection. I have always loved Moonwatches and have had several and my rule is I can only get an new one if it’s better than the one I had. Well needless to say I sold my 91’ full set to help fund this bad boy. Now the only question I have is what do you fine guys and gals think? Serial# 173xxxxx. What is the deal with the Y on the crown? Also looking for a bracelet if anyone can help that would be great. As always TY all.

The Y on the crown is the Naiad symbol as this is a Naiad crown, used on several different types and family’s of Omega without much success, it was on everything from Piepan Constellations to Seamaster 300s to Speedmasters and was meant to use external water pressure to help seal the crown. While its not of any real practical use on a 2998 its an interesting and quite uncommon piece of Omega’s history and cool to see.

It’s a bit like having an 8-track in your C3 Corvette, mostly pointless but novel and cool to have none the less.

Congrats. Appears to be in exceptional condition. 17301xxx is correct for a 2998-1. Certainly should order an extract and take a Geiger Counter reading. Correct bracelet is a 7077 dated 1959 or 1960. Number 6 endlinks. An awesome piece if it all checks out. I’m interested to hear what @ndgal, @MSNWatch and @Spacefruit have to say.

All looks good. Had a few of these over the years. Yours is in excellent condition. What is the back story? The Base 1000 bezel looks almost too good to be true. Safe queen ? Kind regards. Achim

The gentleman inherited it from an uncle and wasn’t into watches so in a way I’m second owner. He took it to a friend of mines store to sell it and I couldn’t leave it without a good home. I’ve had several 70s, 80s and 90s Moonwatches and nothing seems wrong to me but this is my first early Speedy.

Congrats, a great looking watch for its age, I can point you in the direction of a 150mm long 7077, listed as a ‘watchmakers estate find’, but it doesn’t have the endlinks which could prove tricky to find...

Cleanest 1000 bezel we have seen in for a long time. Does it cost a kidney ?

We need to start looking really closely, and push the backstory to one side.

assess this watch cold, don’t listen to the story until later.

things that are flagging to me are:

the state of the lugs compared to the state of the bezel carrier ring.

the size of the rear case bevels.

need a better photo to check the bezel font

It’s still a good watch, but is it entirely original and really a storage find? - the case does suggest otherwise.

all of this is based on photos. Other photos may answer all these questions

I will include some other photos I have and hope these help. I didn’t take these photos but if this isn’t what you need please let me know what you do? I will take some photos in natural light this morning and get those to you as well.

To date it’s the most I’ve ever paid for a watch. So yes by my standards it was a lot!

Look at the colour match between hands and plots.

look at the square end slots in the hands.

I can’t tell if the hands are flat or have a transverse curve.

I still don’t like the heavy loss of case definition compared to the flawless bezel carrier.

also the pusher necks are new.

Does the physical presentation match the oral history?

When magnified with loupe and in person the wear the piece has is consistent of any other really well kept older watch I’ve seen. The hands look flat to me and if they are curved in anyway it is slight. The bezel has plenty of imperfections but obviously nothing major. The case I’m sure at some point has been touched up but the factory bevels are still slightly apparent. My pictures must be in weird lighting or something. I did alot of comparison work with other 2998s on the internet and everything looked right to me. I will be taking it up to John Putnam at coolvintagewatches.com he’s is about an hour from me and I will let you know what he says. If there is an expert local to me it would be him. TY everyone is a big help as always the OFs doesn’t disappoint.

Here is an 2998-1 example clearly exhibiting the curved hour and minute hands.

I would take a very long look a that bezel. As noted by Achim it is literally too good to be true. I'm not saying I can see a tell but the condition gives me pause.

After comparing your pic to the my watch the hands are the same, the font is the same and even the slight distance difference between the seconds register is the same. TY and I love that lollipop hand!

I have been going over this watch with a fine tooth comb for the past 20mins and the bezel is one thing that doesn’t really concern me. Like with pottery first thing I did was run my fingernail across the edge and there are plenty of flea bites. Once magnified there are plenty of micro scratches and nicks. I think with a lot of things when your going to the details we have to have it in person pics are just so deceiving.

Looking at one of the pics id say the hands do have a slight curve
