@Scarecrow Boat suggested that I open a thread here. I am new to the forum, looking to purchase my first vintage (circa 60s/70s) Speedmaster.

Been watching this watch, welcome your thoughts?

Obviously the bracelets newer and the case has seen a polish but not terrible. Crown is also replaced.

The dial looks fairly good at a quick glance but closer inspection suggests that although much of the lume is present and a pleasing colour, there are some patches missing. Better pics would confirm but I’d rate it ‘fair-good’ or possibly ‘good minus’.

I had a feeling that the bracelet is newer, the lume colour attrached me to this watch, had noted the missing bits but still has charm. I'm afraid no further photos available. Your rating was were I was sitting.

I presume that correct bracelets are easy to come by?

The correct bracelet for a -74 is generally an 1171 with trapezoid logo and 633 Endlinks. Fairly easy to find. Budget around £400-450

The missing lume and the condition of the case are the two major issues I'm seeing. I'm not sure what is going on between the lugs, it's possible that even the correct endlinks may not be a great fit. Of course, you can always wear it on a strap.

Is it possible for you to ask for more pictures showing the dial?
Close-ups from different angles?
And is it an auction house or a dealer who is selling?

IMHO - if are looking at Speedmasters without a step dial, might as well get into a 1990s 3590.50. They tend to have really nice patina and you can find one in great condition for $4,000 - $5,000.

If you want a true vintage 861 movement Speedmaster with a step dial, there’s a nice -69 for sale in the private sale section right now. Wrong bezel for the serial (the price reflects this) but it’s still correct for a watch of that age and it’s serviced.

It's a auction house, I will ask for further photos.

As promised further photos, seems like the endlinks are dodgy.. The strap would have to go for sure... Auction House are saying that the case hasn't been polished and to my noob's eye it looks untouched.

Looks like a nice honest example with those new photos although tough to tell if those hands are replacements or not. It *kind of* looks like it has a step dial? Unusual for a -74 but possible, particularly with the early serial number. Shame about the bracelet.

And you know what, I was also looking at the hands thinking are they replacements... again new to this game so doubting what I am seeing...

While I agree with the above, I think we will see a hot -74 market this year. (Well as hot as it can get for a -74 lol)
50th birthday gifts with birth year watches. We saw a little spike on -71 in 2021, probably the same here and then the -76 in a couple of years.

I'm liking the closeness to the "Moon" thing.. ie late 60's or early 70's.. perhaps creep slowly into the 80s. Watch this space (no pun intended).

Looking at the latest pictures you posted, the case looks ok (Good minus).
There are marks, scratches and dings, but the brushing on the sides are still there.
Regarding polished or not, it looks like the watchmaker (or someone else) has given the case a gentle cloth clean/rubb?

The dial is a bit hard to assess with the pictures you have showed, but people have wrote about the dial before.
And regarding the step, these can be found on this reference, and you do have an early serial nr.
It would help if the auction house could take a picture of the inside of the caseback.

And don't focus to much on the bracelet..😉

I don't know how much you have studied these Speedys, but here are some helpful links:

And a nice video:

These above are done by our Dear Black Belted member @Spacefruit !!

Here are links to two recent saleposts on the Forum (David - I hope this is OK?, if not, let me know and I will delete these):

https://omegaforums.net/threads/vin...wonderful-dial-£4750-gbp.164805/#post-2250202

https://omegaforums.net/threads/vin...let-fully-serviced-£3195.166615/#post-2274223

You can compare condition, correctness etc, and also read how the watches are described.
The sale posts here on the Forum are very helpful!

I have also attached some info from the Bibel!

Don't forget to count in a service for the watch, and when and if you will place your bids,
remember the premium, and try to stay focused ( I have lost it a couple of times...😁)!

Good luck!

Thank you so much! I had come across the 101 website, very informative. Is the "bible" worth purchasing?
As for the auction, the watch went for 4000 Euros, a bit steep in my eyes as it needed some money spending on it ie bracelet, service etc..

However, the silver lining, I found you guys and fine tuning my senses...

Thank you again, much appreciated.
