Update, I pulled the trigger.. Bought a '77 145.022. It's in great condition:

1. Unpolished case
2. Serial 3992XXXX - places production August 1977
3. Correct dial, hands and bezel - in very nice conditon and colour
4. Correct bracelet - in really nice condition, with spare link
5. Correct red box with its outer beige colour cardboard box, again in very good condition
6. Orginal receipt from 1978 with warranty card and owners manual

The curious item is the caseback, as it has 145.022-74 ST stamp, however, as the watch is very good condition, I'm thinking that the case back is as it was when bought new...

This thread seems to be covering a similar thing:

Will be getting an extract when the service is up and running again.

Oh, did I buy 'the bible' and have ordered the nifty case opener from this forum's member.

extract will show production post September 77. Also the caseback is not original. Mostl likely accidentally swapped at service. A late 145.022-76 or -78 as denoted by the drop S dial would never have a -74 caseback.

The sales receipt is early 78, can't wait to order an extract. The cashback must have been swapped very early on as the patina matches the rest of the watch..

What makes you think that the watch is not a -78?

Congratulations on the watch! It is a nice one and I wouldn't be too bothered by a swapped case back.

'The bible' places the watch as a -76 with a C3 dial, however, appreciate that the book could be out of line with the most recent extracts.. As per @wagudc, not too bothered with the case back.

Hello again, I hope all are having a great Sunday.. Been busy since joining this forum, invested in "new" Speedmaster, got myself a copy "the" book, got hold of the nifty case opener and invested in lamp/magnifying glass... All great, having fun learning about my watch.

I noted that it has a number on one of its lugs, done very nicely but freehand, what does it denote? I can't find any references to numbers on lugs in the book..
