The OP doesn't seem to question those who say the red hand is original to the watch, but expresses skepticism to those who say the hand was painted over at some point. He may be like those hunting for the money pit on Oak Island; always dismissing the naysayers.

Yep it's obvious that ALL the hands have been crudely worked over with paint. All the center holes are filled with color. But it might be a one-off prototype snuck out the back door of the factory.

<cough>

I like to say "never say never" and have seen experts proved wrong many times before but in this case I think most people here are bang on with this one.
All hands have been off, the white paint on the center of the hr/min hands has been crushed and has flaked off, the other hands have been crudely over painted with not much care.

The dial is amazing! I would get a NOS hand set for the watch and would be the happiest man in the world!
The hands now do not do the watch justice at all.

Cmon, that’s a quality strategy!

Depending upon what comes back from Omegas search, that is probably exactly what I’ll do!

Hands aside that watch is wonderful. There’s no harm in a little investigative work although I agree there’s little/no chance of that hand being original.

What a runner up prize to simply be left with that watch and a normal hand set!😉

You wouldn't be one of those preachers that put on the tent revivals would you? If so perhaps you can put your hand on the watch, mutter something in tongues and heal those damaged hands 😁

Again, y’all are seeing inter web photos. For the moment I will stick with the recommendations of the Omega tech. I think (would hope) that their in-person examination would have determined that almost immediately. But it did not.

If Stevie Wonder was the Omega tech then your story would be more plausible. In person or pictures on the web won't make a difference with those crudely repainted hands. It's manifestly obvious.

Or, I could post all I want in this thread. The more you insist there's a chance those hands are genuine from the factory, the more push-back you're going to get.

Im not insisting anything other than that there are still pieces of the puzzle still to be fit. You are the one painting the picture prematurely.

Me and the majority of members that have handled Omegas for years. As posted by others, enjoy the watch despite the hands.

Mate I saw your report asking that the thread be deleted, I won’t be doing that as it is still interesting for future learning for other people. \

That said, I can tell you the various members who have said the hand is badly painted over are absolutely correct, it’s obviously that.

This thread reminds me greatly of this previous thread where some guy was convinced his refinished Jedi chrono was a prototype and kept harping about how “the watchmaker didn’t say it was refinished” as if watchmakers even care about that in the slightest. It isn’t their job, they’re not collectors or historians, some may have a passion for specific watches but they receive zero training in terms of originality of dials and hands etc.

https://omegaforums.net/threads/✧-omega-speedy-jedi-✧.21205/page-3

Now having said that, I would also appreciate it if people kept things respectful and didn’t pile on, not everyone can be convinced and if this gentleman wishes to believe everyone is wrong that’s fine really. Unless it appears for sale at some point marketed as a prototype or something original, in which case I’m sure the concerns will resurface.

Thank you and I shall. Any advice on sources for new hands if it comes to that?

I'm not up on where to buy vintage Speedmaster parts but for sure there's members here who will point you in the right direction according to your geographical area 👍

As a final comment from me on this thread, I wanted to post a picture of what exactly was meant by those Watchuseek posters about “authentic” red seconds hands on vintage Speedmasters.

As you can see, it is a different color red (more orange), is slab-shaped with no lume, and looks nothing like the hand on your watch. If yours looked like this, we might believe it was original.

Agreed. Any of my fellow watchmakers who would believe this hand was not painted, is clearly mistaken...

The other subdial hands have been painted, and as you can see above paint has been stripped from the center of the hour and minute hands.

Unfortunately OB employees are often very inexperienced when it comes to vintage, and in this case it shows.

Cheers, Al
