Speedmaster 105.012-65, an auction in the Sun with a Brewski!!

Well Guys, I finished another auction with no success..🙁

And I know, why can't this dude just relax on his holiday….and skip the Omega Scene for a week…?

Well, this watch came up for a few weeks ago, and looked kind of interesting.
A worn and used 105.012-65.
With an estimate of 2000 - 3000 £ / 2300 - 3450 € / 2500 - 3750 $.
Which of course was very low..

So I downloaded the images, and also asked for more (as usual)…
The auction house was very helpful, but could not help me with close ups etc..

The watch was in a serious need for an overhaul and service.
And the case back was horrible, and a Forum member here made a great post on this.
Thanks to @Passover , cheers mate!

The dial was hard to see regarding blemishes or spots, and I had no help from the auction house…
The lumeplots looked brown, and not so atractive.
Hands where correct, but missed lume…
The case was actually very nice, considering the case back.
The bezel was ok, and had a ”cool” vintage feeling.

Crown was a service/replacement part.
The bracelet was a 1506 with nr 16 endlinks.
There where some servicemarks, so someone had done something with the watch, but it must have been a looong time ago.
The movement looked nice, but no gasket..?
And the auction house stated that the movement was loose in the case??

The thing that made me sign up for a phonebid was that it was a March 1966 (birthyear, Yepp - stupid thing..)!
Thanks to @eugeneandresson wonderful website for finding date info etc!
His and Speedmaster101 website has helped and lectured me Big Time!

And it could turn out to be a nice and decent watch after a service (except for the caseback).
So I made up a Masterplan regarding biding etc...😎

A few minutes before the lot was up, I got the call from the auction house.
I lay low on the first bids, then it paused so I started biding, and I had a few bids against me.
I even let my biding go a little past my budget, but then I had to stop.

And the hammer fell at 4400 £ / 5070 € / 5500 $ plus the 25.2 % premium.

In my opinion, a bit high considering the condition and also the awful case-back.

What do you guys think??
Maybe somebody here on the Forum is Happy now??

I think the value would have been there minus the 25% auction premium. There is a lot that needs addressing with that - hand damage, possible dial damage on the upper left (although could be reflection), that caseback 😲😲.... But does have the original fat neck pushers, the bracelet is valuable on its own, the bezel wouldn't be terrible if cleaned, and a new crystal would likely do wonders. I wouldn't feel bad about letting this slip by I don't think. But I could be wrong.

I think the price is about right given the condition and bracelet. Not cheap, but not expensive.

However, although I think it’ll clean up well, I think if id have bought it, id end up selling it. It doesn’t strike me as a watch that id find attractive.

Don't know the value of the watch but the bracelet with endlinks alone is probably 2500EUR

The bracelet has a couple of issues, I don’t see it as a €2500 bracelet

Have not looked too deeply into it on the above pictures and maybe there are more pictures on the auction site with more issues shown, but 1506/16 seem to be very uncommon and have not seen them for sale for less than 2000-2500EUR even in not so great condition

I think you dodged a bullet there mate.
Speedmasters can often look better in the flesh than in photos, but in this case I think the opposite will prove to be true.

I’m confused. Why are you letting a very good/excellent go and hunt for these in worse shape?

Here are some more pictures of the bracelet, and it looks tired and in need for "some help".

Now that I've had a day to think more about the auction and reflecting over the answers that I have got from you Guys,
I am happy that I didn't go further,
@Spacefruit has written it a couple of times on his website (Speedmaster101) - Do you like the watch, and does it make you SMILE!??

I don't think so with this one!

Cheers!

A 1506 band dated 3/64 on a ref. 105.012-65 is for sure not the right bracelet
for this reference.
Cheers

Note: By the way the crown is a service part too.

You own a 105.012-66 CB (the one in your avatar), right? Is it not for sale at the moment?

@Patrik83 , I do find your posts a bit weird....?

But to ease your worries:
I have owned a 105.012-66 CB
And it is the same watch that I have as my Avatar
I do NOT have any watches for sale

I do hope my answers make you HAPPY??
😀

Cheers!
