Speedmaster 105.003 Serial 'drift'

An Ed White with caseback reference 105.003-63 would usually be expected to have a movement serial number in the range of 2052 1xxx to 2052 6xxx (speedmaster101).

Would folks be turned off from buying if instead the serial range was for a -64 ie has a range of 2052 7xxx to 2282 7xxx ?

Am reading through posts and haven't found much on this.

Thanks.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by “turned off.” Absent an argument from a knowledgeable source, I would suspect either the movement or case back to be incorrect, and it would affect my valuation to a degree (all other things being equal).

Without an extract or some confirmed outliers (with extracts) I would always value as if it has a replaced movement or caseback as mentioned above.

Cool. But afaik extracts don't help on this question, @Arancio601

hi @timoss ,,, Yep....that's why I've posted the question here on OF 😉 due to gaps in what I know

>> When I plug in the serial # on ilovemyspeedmaster.com, result shows the watch is 1963 or 1964:
  • ST105.012-64 (Caliber 321) and/or
  • ST105.003-63,64 (Caliber 321)

If you order an extract it will only show 105.003 and no -64 or -63, so why bother, both versions seem reasonable ... if it is a nice watch at a reasonable price go for it

fair point on extracts in this case, apologies. It would be good seeing the serials of confirmed outliers to those ranges If they exist. A shame there isn’t a better serial number register (minus the last couple of digits if needed).
Hopefully one of the members who have collected a bunch of serial data can help you

If the other typical factors that folks value are correct, and the price is fair, it wouldn’t bother me a bit.
